If we go forth into our fields and pastures,

their weighty burdens of drift above tho
stratified deposits of a yet earlior period,
and tho heterogenous masses of mingled
dirt, gravel and bowldors found among our
mountains and stretching east and west

when glaciers, liko those of Greenland,
moved over our continent and scot thoir
mmhty bergs into tho sea. But whence
camo this power and whither has it gone?
is tbo question which naturally comos to
every lip. There aro abundant reasons to
believe that this glacial forco is periodic,
liko so many other of tho operations of nat
ure. Several thCCHcs havo been propounded at
different times to account for tho periodicity
of glacial action. That of Croll, which ac
counts for the varying mean tomporaturoof
tho earth by tho revolutions of the seasons
around tho earth's orbit and tho changing
eccentricity of tho orbit itself, seems to bo
tho most rational. Winter at aphelion must
bo longer and colder than winter at peri
helion, and tho variation must increase with
tho increase of tho eccentricity ot tho orbit,
and with tho increase ot tho inclination of
the axis ot tho earth to tho plane of its
orbit. '
