Permission to gaze upon tho Sultan's
treasure can only ho obtained by meant
of a firman from his Sublimo Highness him
self, a sovereign utteranco similar to those
by which peace or war is declared. Having,
however, after innumerable difficulties ob
tained tho coveted document, an aide-decamp
conducted mo to tho palace known as
the Old Seraglio, a largo, gloomy looking
structure without any windows and sur
rounded by deserted pardons. Upon arriv
al thero I was handed over to tho guardian
of the treasure a high functionary of most
majestio mien, who was accompanied by
thirty officials of lower rank to assist in tne
ceremony of opening the doors. The latter
ranged themselves in two rows, ono on
each sido of the entrance. A large green
velvot bag containing the Troys was passed
from hand to hand until it reached the
guardian of the treasure. He picked out
tho keys and handeu them to two of tho as
sistants. The outer door was then opened
Behind this was a wrought iron grating
secured by enormous padlocks. This being i
swung open we found ourselves in tbo flrst
of three large, badly lighted and mysteri
ous-looking apartments. I was at last in
the presence of tho treasures of tho Sultani
The first object which attracted my at
tention was a large throno of beaten gold,
which occupied tho center of the room and
which was Inprustcd "with thousands ot
rubies, emeralds and pearls. This throne,
according to an inscription dn it, was taken
by Sultan Selim from the Persians in 1614.
It is, however, doubtful whether this work
of art is so old.
Another throno In tho amo room is more
Interesting. It is a fine specimen of Turk
ish art in the sixteenth century. It is of
tho same form as the seats found In many
of the mosques, and was intended to be sat
upon cross-legged. At each corner 'is a
column which supports a dome terminating
in a jo woled point. It is of ebony and sand
wood inlaid with mother of pearl, tortoise
shell, gold and silver. It is covered with
fantastic plants in mother of pearl,
tho center of the flowers being com
posed of largo rubies, emer
alds, sapphires and pearls. Suspended
by a golden chain so as to bo over tho head
of tho Bultan is a goldon heart from which
depends a large emerald of irregular form,
measuring four inchos long and lj Inches
across.
Tho three rooms nro decorated with mag
nificent suits of armor. Here Is to bo seon
the beautiful coat of mail with damaskeened
plates worn by Sultan Murad IV. when he
captured Bagdad in 1633. Beside it is the
scimitar of the same monarch. The guard
and handle are inlaid with diamonds cut
flat and sot in checker work, each stone be
ing the same size and half an inch square
This is a pattern of which tho Turkish Jew
elers of that ponod seem to have been fond,
for near this sword is a largo gold vasa ln
the same style. The whole of the body of
this vessel is hidden by a mosaic of square,
flat diamonds, to the number of 2,000.
The bulk of the treasures is in glass
cases,. the bottoms of which are covered
with magnificent velvet horso cloths. Ono
of theso, moasuring eight feot by seven, Is
literally covered with designs embroidered
In pearls the size of a large pea. Among
other notable objects are a mossiyo conical
gold helmet, a pair of golden stirrups of ex
quisite design, and daggers, sabors and
other arms without number, all beautifully
decorated with gold and precious stonos.
All these are arranged In the greatest
disorder and mingled with ohjects of no
value. By the side of pieces whoso valuo
l incalculable may bo seen modern Paris
and Vienna clocks, porcelain vases, pistol
cases 5llver jndvos, forks and spoons,
toothpicks, and oven loather cigar cases and
