without a license from the county
clerk and, being under legal age.
they could not obtain a license with
out the consent of their legal guar
dians or parents. A guardian was
duly appointed for Camille (one who
would In all probability have given
Ins consent to the match), and the
couple concluded to bo married ou
George's twenty-first birthday anni
versary. Just about this time the
dismayed mamma arrived from
Grant's Pass and kicked up a great
fuss. She had first telegraphed a
warrant of arrest of the couple, and
came in like a whirlwind of wrath.
The young couple wern't intimidat
ed, however, and the discomfited
mamma finally consented to a com
promise. George is to stay with the
troupe, and the wedding Is to be
postponed till they reach San Fran
cisco. This seemed satisfactory to
all parties. The lawyers received a

foru by Tuesday evening's train, to
rejoin the troupe there."

Progressing Finely Large List
of Stockholders.
A Capital Journal reporter had
the pleasure this morning of meet
ing Mr. R. H. Miller, vice-president
and treasurer of the Gold Moun
tain and Dry Gulch Consolidated
Gold and Silver Mining Company,
who returned Saturday evening
from the mines, where he had been
spending several days looking over
and examining the company's prop
erty, and also noting the progress
of the men now at work.
Mr. Miller says the surveyor, E.
J. McCaustiand, and corps of as
sistants are now making final loca
tion survey for the flume for the
purpose of bringing water in and in
all probability the survey will be
completed within the next ten days,
when all the estimates will have
been made and the contracts will be
let for the Immediate construction
of the work.
Mr. McCaustiand, In testing the
placer mines of Dry Gulch, took
live or six shovelfuls of dirt from
the top of the ground, mixed with
grass and rubbish, and washed it
out at a small spring, and got at
least a teaspoonful of gold, and he
assured Mr. Miller the whole prop
erty is the richest mining ground
lie has ever seen.
The force of men working on the
road have reachedElk creek, with
in 4 miles of Quarlzville anil were
to commence to-day building a
bridge over Elk creek. A large
sawmill already purchased by the
company is now waiting the com
pletion of the road to be taken in
there for immediate active service.
To give some idea of the extent to
which the stock of this company has

Accidental Death of J. W.
Lawrence. Deceased was riding
on a load of lumber at Portland, yes
terday, when by some means he fell
off the wagon, and the heavy wheels
passed over his body, causing death
in about two hours. Deceased was
34 years 10 months and 29 days old.
He leaves a wife and one child, two
brothers and five sisters to mourn
