In 1800 the agricultural exports
of tho United States constituted
8o.67 per cent, of $310,242,423 of ex
ports, the remaining 14.43 being man
ufactured and partly manufactured
articles. In 1887 the total exports
wero $iO;i,U22,yi, or which only
74.41 per cent, was classed by the
Bureau of Statistics as agricultural
products. But no careful statistcian
will accept the classification of the
Bureau of Statistics without chal
lenging tho propriety of Inserting in
the list- of agricultural products
canned meats, Hour and an infinite
variety of wholly or partly manu
factured articles. A careful rear
rangement of the table of exports in
tho year named shows that agri
cultural, forest and mining products
in their raw state constituted only
02 per cent, of our exports, while
maiuifacturrd products made up the
remaining 38 per cent. An examin
ation in detail of the exports of the
fiscal year ending June 30, 18S9,
would probably show that the pro
portion of agricultural products was
still smaller tliau in 1887, for It is
notorious that there was a great
falling ofl'In the shipment of wheat
and other farm products in the
former year.

WHAT IS FOG.
Ill un Interesting letter to Science,

Home luteistlug and valuable par

and nature of fog. lie says that It
Is udmlted that fog Is simply cloud
composed of water dust, or solid

Many have supposed that a dust

Savings the Foundation of Wealth.
The man who saves something
every year, quotes n contemporary,
who had heard the remark from
every quarter, is on the load to

to save much. If not, s-ave a little
Do not think that a dollar or a dime
Is too small a sum to lay by. Every
body knows how little expenditures
get away witli large bums. But few
seem to know that the rule is one
tint woilts botii ways. If a dime
spent here anil a dollar there soon
makes a large hole in a man's in
come, so dimes and dollars laid
away soon become a visible and re
spectable accumulation. In this
country any man can make himself
independent or keep himself under
the harrow of life, according as lie
wastes or spends his small change.
Most of our millionaires laid the
foundation of their fortunes by hav
ing. It Is said that Senator Farwell
commenced life as a surveyor.
Cornelius Vanderbilt began life as
a farmer.
Postmaster-General Wnniuiiiiker's
first salary was $1.2-5 a week.
A. T. Stewart made his first start
as a school teacher.
Cyrus Field began life as a clerk
in a New England store.
Andrew Carnegie did his llrst
work in a telegraph ofllco at $3 a
week.
Whitelaw Iteid, our miuister to
France, did work as correspondent
of a Cincinnati newspaper for $ a
week.
Moses Taylor clerked in Wator
street, New York, at $2 a week.
George W. Childs was an errand
boy for a bookseller at ?4 a month.
Jay Gould canvassed Deleware
county, N. Y., selling maps at $1.50
apiece.
And to tho above names, which
are familiar to most persons, might
bo added hundreds of others whoso
fortune and fame had the same
small beginning.
The same or better opportunities
exist to-day for bright energetic
young men to bticceed that existed
when tho above inilliouaires begun
their business life, but to accomplish
it, the samo perseverance and
economy which characterized their
early career must be observed.
Fashion's Fancies.
All kinds of feather trimmings
will be in vogue.
Directoiro-redlngotes are more
fashionable than ever this autumn.
Elegant traveling dresses are made
up in olive and French gray camel's
hair fabrics, with ursuliue cloaks to
match.
Armurcs, corded silks and bro
cades are in greater use for elegant
toilets for evening than rich fabrics
of any other description.
The mouo:onous yoke which has
been In fashion for so long a time is
now varied by tho use- of wide, cir
cular collars nearly covering the
shoulders,
Tho coaching capo, which is really
a series of flno capes overlapped
mado into one, is worn over a Jacket
of tho samo materia'.. Tho edect of
the garment Is excellent.
Pretty afternoon dresses of cash
mere and camel's hair aro made very
effective by tho use of velvet r
heavily nipped ribbons, tlieo being
inoro favored for such
