Death From Tight baring.
A verdict of death from tight lac
ing is, perhaps, still to ho sought
among tlio curiosities of law, but a

It in a verdict of death from pressure

a potir servant girl, who died after a
fright, and her death was atlilbiited
by tho medical witnesses to tho fact
that she was too tightly belted to
enable her to stand the wear and
tear of any sudden emotion. She
was a notorious tight later; her col

possible to loosen it at tho critical
moment, and under her stays she
wore a belt so remorselessly buckled
as to prevent tho free circulation of

It s in May 183.3, that we arriv
ed safely in New York, and since
the reader sees us once more safely
among fi lends it i time for the nar
rative to eloo, as its inl.ssion is per
formed. Hut before concluding

Aldcn and Horatio Davi, Mho were
left as hostages with tin natives of
the Island upon which we found
ourselves wneu tne vessel was
wiccked and where we w ere detained
for twelve months.
Upon my return to HtHon ns soon
as possible I pushed on to Washing
ton to see what, if anything, had
been done looking to tho relief of
the men who were thought to be on
the Pelew islands, having been
ah ard tho ship Mentor when she
was wrecked. I tound that the
man-of-war "Vinee'ino," hud been
sent out to her station oft Chili on
the Pacltic coast.
Upon arrival at the Pclews the
Vinceiincs nnchorcd od'Coieora at
the opposite end of the island and
about seventy-five miles from where
we were captives. As fortune
would have it, when the vessel
anchored there "Old Charley," the
Englishman whom we hud met
there, wan at Corcora. Assisted by
the natives he rowed out to the
vessel and went aboard at once,
relating to the Captain the story of
the wreck of the Mentor nnd the
escape of nil the men but three at
dill'orent times and that I hose three
(Davis, Mentor and Aldcn) at that
time were on the opposite 'side of
tlie island. The Captain sent word
to them that ho was there to relieve
thorn. Hut before getting their re
ply the vessel proceeded on to Toby
to get tho men who were supposed
to be there. Hut arriving there none
were found, all having either miido
their cxcupo or died and been sent
adrift on the sea. ICobac, one of the
Pelows who had gone with us to
Toby was there and had not forgot
ten tho little Kngllrth I had taught
him, and he gave what Information
was desired. Kobao was taken
aboard and tho ve-ol hurried back
to the Pelew island. After arriving
there Kobac, the Pelew chieftain,
was returned to his people, and ll
was found that but two men were
left, Aldeu having niaile his escape,
aided by a friendly Pelew, to a pass
ing vessel. Tho natives unwillingly
gave up their prisoners, who were
taken on board and tho vessel sailed
away, bearing its rescued Anieil
euns safely home. It mav be stated
here that tho Vincennes arrived at
Hoston while I was at Washington
In the interest of my shipmates.
To conclude of the twentv-two
men who sailed from New Hedford
July III, l&ll, on the ship Mentor,
only seen ever lived to tell the tale.
