engine will bu superseded in a hurry
by any other motor, not even elec
tricity, lie says, on the contrary,
that Improvements will continue to
be made In it which will adapt it
more and more to the mighty Indus
trial enterprise of the centuries to

small industries, not for great ones.

the direction of overcoming the
enormous wasto of fuel whereby
speed and power are obtained.

In printing, steel plates are used,
on which two hundred stamps are
engraved. Two men arc kept hard
at work covering them with colored
Ink", and passing them to a man

of paper upon which two hundred
jtaiups are engraved have dried
enough they are sent Into another
room and gummed. The gum used
for tills purpose is a peculiar compo
sition, made of the powder of dried
potatoes and other vegetables, mixed
witli water, which is better than
any other material; for instance,
gum arable, which cracks tlio paper
badlv. They are put between sheets
of paslchoard and pressed in by
drauliu presses, capable of applying
a weight of two thousand tons. The
next tiling is to cut tlio sheets in
half, each sheet containing a hun
dred stamps. Tliis is done by a girl,
witli a largo pair of shears, hv hand
being preferred to that of machin
ery, wlilcn method would destroy
too inanv stamps. They are then
passed to other squads, who perfor
ate the paper between the stamps.
Next tlioy are pressed once more,
and then packed and labeled, and
stowed away. If a singlo stamp is
torn or in any way mutilated the
whole sheet of one hundred stamps
is burned. Five hundred thousand
are burned every week from this
cause. For the past twenty years
not a sheet has been lost, such care
lias been taken in counting them.

A valley surpassing in reality of
horrors the fabled region of the upas

Island is volcanic, and in one spot
the emanations from the interior of
the earth are so deadly that the

that the human skeletons are those

Texas possesses, perhaps, as great a
variety of tho serpent family as can bo
found any where on tho globe, writes a cor
respondent of tho New York Times. To men- j

one-tenth of tho varieties indigenous to this
blestfcd country. I
Thunder snakes nro by no means com
mon in Texas, and yet they aro often en
countered by pralne!travelcrs, especially be
fore and after thunderstorms. Flashes of
lightning nnd claps of thunder, which aro
bo terrllying to bipeds and quadrupeds,
seem to havo tho greatest charm and de
light for theso members of tho ophidian fam
ily. Whcnover a thunderstorm comes up
meso snaKCB navo a regular picnic. They
como crawling out of holes, from behind
rocas nnd rotten stum ps and enjoy tho fun
whllo it lasts. Their naturo is quarrelsome,
their character fierce, and they aro aggres
sivo in a high degree, which qualities aro
rcmarknblo in being possessed by a serpent
thnt is both fangless and innocuous.
Tlio black snako is so well known to nil
North America that it is hardly worth notic
ing him from this point of tho world. Wo
have two species in Texas; ono which inhab
its marshy places, ponds, creek bottoms and
shady spots, and another that lives In tho
mountains, among tho rocks, and in tho
woods where dead, dry leaves nro plentiful
and young birds numerous. lie is not a
constrictor and ho is not poisonous. Nearly
all striking serpents havo fangs, usually
loaded with poison, whllo tho constrictors
seldom if ever strike, preferring to affec
tionately squcezo their enemies to death.
Green grass snakes, which aro perfectly
beautiful In this latitude; bead snakes llko
wlso, milk, corn, garter and runners are
entirely too common to discuss.
Coach-whips nro remarkable In this coun
try for thoir tremendous length and their
surprising? speed. Tho form of tho reptile
is elegantly slender, his coloring Is of tho
most dellcato boauty, and his constricting
powers nro scarcoly oven surpassed by
boas, anacondas or pythons. Ho Is cream
or clay-colored, very much like tho hard
baked pralrio over which ho glides, is very
long in proportion to ins diameter, and his
scales aro arranged in such a manner that
thoy closely resemble tho plaited leather of
a whip. Tho movements of tho coach-whip
aro llko chain lightning. Not endowed with
poison, jot has ho tremendous power of
locomotion ana torriblo strength In his
long, slondcr colls, which ho wraps about
and entangles tho limbs In such a fashion,
binding them to tho body, and rendering
bis victim porfectly helpless, llo forms his
colls into a living lasso, which aro capablo of
crushing almost any thingwithln tho deadly
rings.

him. It was a ncck-aud-iicok raco for a
few minutos, but at last I gavo him a rap
with a long stick I hold In my hand, which
produced nn instantaneous crisis. Ho
leaped upon that stick llko a shot, and in
loss than a second was squeezing it with all
his forco. I dropped tho stick aud lot him
havo a fow minutes' fun, after which I
smashed his head with a stono nnd sklunod
him.

Vicinity. Thoy seem to desiro tho comnnn v
of their dangorous Uinsmon, nnd by somo

truo breed. Thoy aro in reality ground
rattlesnakes, with tho saino diamond-back
markings, aro slightly poisonous, havo a
Bhort, thick, chunky body, but no sign of
rattlo about them. Thoro is another snako
in Texas known ns tho pilot. Ho is nlsn
slightly poisonous, boasts large, yellow
tripes along his body, and is covered with
beautiful yellow zigzag linos on both sides.
As a rulo, poisonous mid non-poisonous
snakes aro otcrual onomlos. Tho most
deadly serpent wo havo In Amoricaistho
rattlesnako. Tho most harmless of ophid
ians nro tho bull, black and king snakes, all
of whom will tacklo and kill n rattlor with
