Icecream Is such a thoioughly
American dish that entwined about
the Inevitable saucer of vanilla are
some peculiar American customs of
etiquette that to tho unsophisticated
ami uninitiated foreigner sometimes
seem barbarous. They aru not,
however, for every true and loval
American boy will admit that ho
would rather eat leo cream out of
his sweetheart's spoon than use his

A. J). 1839. For some years past
they have complained of remark-
able dampness of tho atmosphere
during tho spring ami Miiumuri
months. Tobacco gets to drip nl-1
most, and salt dissolves away into ?. '
watery substance. For Wetka at ,
a time It is very hticky. Postage i
stamps and gumned envelopes slick '
together and are often spoiled. Some
seasons are a great deal wor0o than
others. The country all around and
far west was settled long ngo. 'J ho
sons and daughters of contempora
ry pioneers have gone wefet, raised
families tiiat in turn have gone
farther wes.t and are raising families
of their own. I copy from a letter
of an intelligent young lady who
was educated m Colorado on the
Gunnison river, far west of the
Rocky mountains. She is the
daughter of ono of the young pio
neers of I85.r)-'j, and is visiting In
Omah.i: "There is usually a good
breeze; but it is very bultry. I can
notice such a change from the dry
air of Colorado to this. It seems
very unpleasant iind f don't believe
J can ever live in such a damp cli
mate." Now it is contended by many
learned men that tho climate has
not become any dumper, because,
they assert, that "no more rain falls
on tho average." That may bo so,
birt every old settler in all this re-1
gion wiil toll you that the earth ami
the air have become much damper.
A great many facts could be cited to
show this. Twenty years ago delv
ing with the .spade a hund.'ed miles
west of tlie Missouri river caused
men to exclaim, "this ground litis
not been wet since tho deluge." All
under the heavy sod was like one
solid dust pile. Now it is all wet
from below the sod or surface. Wo
c.uitiot tell what effect certain small
booming causes nitiy havoou climate.
It is now reported that the Kllfol
Tower is causing incessant thunder
showers all over Paris. If it shall bo
proven true then th time is coining
when man will bo ablu to cause the
rain to fall and to change the cli
mate by erecting such towers and
connecting them by cables over
which electricity will How. That
tower itself is a miracle of art with
out exaggeration. Its height is al
most exactly ono thousand feet.
Now tho highest pyramid Is but -ISO
feet and the highest of all other
steeples) and monuments does not
exceed over. "illO feet. This gives us
some idea of Its Importance when
we consider it.
