Storeu ttio Shooting.
Just .buforo tho battle at Vllliau13
burg my coiuii'iiiy vns on picket at
the front. Them in on the left of
mo ns I went on guard one night
was aDutchnvin named Jake Klein.
Ho was a good-natured obedient
fellow, aud not easily put out, but
on that night he was pur of sorts,
and as the rebel pickets were con
stantly firing in our direction Jake
Uually got his dander up. It was
against orders to leave his po3t, but
after a while ho came lumbering
through the bushes like an ox team
and growled eut: .
"Vhell, shall we do somctiugs?"
Vhat cau we do?" I asked in
return. -. ' -
' ''Take 'cm' some prisoner, ell?" '
"You had better go back and keep
quiet."
"But doso rebels vash shooting nil
der'vhlle. Dotvashsu't fair play.
I pelief I go oafer and stop hhii."
"Well, hurry up I replied," with
a laugh; aud to my supprisc and
consternatiou he started oil' in the
direction of a' rebel picket post. I
called to him but he rtiisiwered back
through the darkness: "It vash all
right. I make dot feller behave
herself or pring him sonvj prisoner."
He was gone half an hour before
I heard anything. Then there was
a crashing iu the bushes, some
swearing and growling, and Jake
appeared J with a full confederate
infantryman, having a firm clutch
ou his collar.
"Ho vash dose feller," ho an
nounced as he came 'to a halt. "He
dbau' promise to' keepshtill, an so I
pring him along."
"Drat tho onery Dutchman;
growled the Johnny., ire stole up
behind mo and jumpjd on. nip like
a mouutaiu before 1 heard him."
"Who vash some Dutchman?"
said Jake.
"You'wa"."'
"Look out n lciillo ole feller or I
knock oft your, head! I vash only
' Dutch in my mouth all tho rest
vash Union.' 'Come along aud be
have herself,-or I'll make you dead
as crowbars!"
Jake had actually captured a pick
et,' on his post aud brought him ofF
a prisoner, ttici he did it as cooly a
any of tho rest of us would go out
to drill. The reb was so mad he
cried, hut he was turned over to
headquarters, and private- Jake
Ktelu had "corporal" as a handle to
his namo after a few days.

, Study of Dead Tongues.
While Latin and Greek will nev
er cease to hold their places in the
troht rank of educational agents, it
is an anachronism of the giosest
kind to insist ou a prolonged
study of theso two dead languages
as tho basis for tho general culture
of a well-educated gentleman in
the latter end of this nineteenth
century, says Professor Blackie,
the mora so that experience litis
taught that nineteen out of twenty
young 'men who have- been driven
through' this routine of the dead
languages at school In after life
make uouse-of them, and tho fruits
which their boasted classical train
ing has to show aro in tho inverse
ratio of the labor spent upon it.
