wero the thirteenth, was considered
a light showing. The remains that
aro now being removed from the
drift aro far ndvanced iu decomposi
tion, and the physicians in charge
aro advocating their cremation as
fast as found, as it is almost Impossi
ble to hold them safely. Tho work
of clearing away tho debris is pro
gressing very encouragingly. Tho
men wero not required to proceed to
duy, but nine-tenths of them volun
teered to continue, and, ns a result,
a largo Inroad was made in the drift
in tho central portion of tho city.
Main street, which was tho principal
thoroughfare, and one vast biockado
is now about oloared. Work on the
wreckage above tlio stone bridge is
going on rather slowlv. Tho force
is smnll and tho difilettltlcs great.

days and complete the work east of

points to an Immediate resumption

steamer City of Pekiu arrived this
evening from Hong Kong, vin Yo
kohama. Tho Shnngal Courier of
May 10, contains n news-letter re
ceived from a correspondent at
Chung King, to the ellect that Iai
Chow, a city of some importance on
the Yaugts.c-Kiang, was reported
os being nearly destroyed by tiro
about a month previous. Seven,
out of the eight gates of the city, are
said to havo been destroyed and the
loss of life, burnt and trampled to
death, is reported at 10,000.
