    THE CAPITAL EVENING- JOUBNAL.
wiped them off mechanically with hlsrouRh,
strong hand. Ho did not know whether
they woro from pity of her or of himself;
he know not which was tho stronger with
in him; ho was not elearly conscious of
cither, but of a dull unhapplness such as ho
had never known.
Ho looked down at his clothes with faint
shame; they were not his best ones. He
had a ready-made suit at home, but these
his mother had made. Ho wished they
looked better. Tho light In Dlssol's window
cast his long shadow on tho whito ground.
It wavered there, shrinking and lingering;
then It pushed on and up to tho door.
It was not tho custom in Fenco Corners
to rap; it would haro been looked upon as a
useless formality. Ho stepped Into BissePs
large, scantily furnished, rag-carpeted best
room
Ho gasped as ho stood thero. He had
vaguely hoped for a littlo reprlove, but she
sat thero by tho lamp, alone, bending
over some work. She roso at his entrance,
and came forward a littlo to offer her hand ;
but ho did not see it, and sho dropped it
back in awkward haste.
"Won't you take a chair?" sho said.
She brought ono forward. Thornton sat
down. Ho dropped his hat as ho did so, and
picked it up with a red faco. Then he sat
still. Ho would have tried to speak, but ho
knew ho could not; his tonguo felt thick
and immovable.
"It's snowing, ain't it," said tho school
teacher; sho boro tho marks of dtfiidenco
herself in her timorous voico and look.
Thorton nodded; it wa3 all ho could -do.
Ho stared at her fixedly, almost vacuously.
His mind wandered back and strove to
anchor itself to something. Onco ho had
spent an evenlngat Bissel's, on tho occasion
of a soclablb, and taken her hand in ono of
tho games; once ho had overtaken her, in a
wagon, on her way to school and given her
a lift. That was all. Ho thought it might
havo been loss hard for him if there had
boon something more, but that was all his
morbid solf-dlstrustfulness had allowed
him.
The ticking of a clock on a corner-stand
filled tho silence. It was a round, nickel
clock, and it ticked so loudly as to forces
itself upon them.
"That's my school-clock," said tho teach
er. "I am all ready for to-morrow. Thero
are my books over thero with it and tho
register.
Tho school diroctor dropped his miserablo
eyes to tho faded strlpo in tho carpet at his
feet, but ho did not sea it; his hat shook
with tho trembling of his hands.
"I've bo'n thinking how many I'll have,
likoly," tho school-teacher went on. His
misery imparted itself to her in a degreo of
nervousness, and she let her work drop. "I
bad twentyfivo this summer; there's al
ways more winters, ain't there!"
He managed to say yes. His eyes wero,
wandering about the room now, his lips
parted as if for air. Ho saw a now pane in
tho window, clumsily puttied a camphor
bottle left on the molodo on a break In tho
cane seat of a chair a small tub filled with
white asters still In bloom. Ho continued
looking at t hose.
"They'ro real late, ain't they? " said tho
girl. "They'ro mine. I potted 'em myself
and I guess they'll last best part of tho win
ter; I've heard they will, took caro of. Do
you want one!"
She put down her work and went and
picked ono. Then, with a shy laugh, sho
took her scissors and went back to them.
"May bo your mother'd like a fow; she
hain't got 'em, has sho?" she said.
Sho made a bunch and tied it with her
black thread. Thornton watched her; a
slight girl In a cheap and well-worn dress,
her dark hair in a girlish braid, and her e
eyes mild. This sho was, but who shall toll
what he was? His agony rose, culminated
as she turned to him; ho clutched his hat
till its stiff brim clacked. She was coming
toward him with the flowers.
"There, may bo she'd liko a few," sho re
peated, faint-heartediy; but ho did not hear
her. He felt his face aflamo liko fire, and
a choking in his throat. Bo struggled to
speak, and did make an inarticulate Bound,
at which sho looked at him In wonder.
Ho looked up at her pitifully and then fell
stumblingly on his knees at her feet and
buried his face in her skirt, and groping
for her hands, pulled them down till they
pressed his throbbing head and rested
there, her happy, wondering tears falling
upon theui.
,
" Bashful?" said Davo Kinney to Hanks,
tho store-keeper. "I'd like to know what's
yourWwo' bashfulness. Wy, Jim Thorn
ton walked out o' this storo that night and
up to Bissel's straight as a string, and told
that school-teacher that; owin to circum
stances that he didn't havo no control over,
she couldn't have tho icjwol this winter, ner
likely thero couldn't nobody olso neither,
but if It'd bo any consideration to her, sho
could havo Mm; told her that right up and
down, and didn't make no bones of it. If
Jim Thornton's bashful, w'y, tho feller that
ain't 'a what Vd liko to see," Emma A.
Opper, In Leslie's Newspaper.
AT SECOND HAND.
A Man's Pson for Books and a Boy't
Fa slon of Barter.
"There used to be ono man," said the
second-hand man to a Lcwiiton (Me.)
Journal reporter, 'who camo down to seo
me very often. Ho hasn't been around for
a month, and I think must havo moved
away. Ho was a queer chap, and no mis
take about it. Ho worked in tho Auburn
shoo factories, and, I've heard said, made,
good wages. But ho had a liking for old
books, and about every week ho visited my
library out there in the corner in search of
something new that was old. His great
hobby was books pertaining to agriculture
If he could got hold of any of thoso Board
of Agriculture reports he was just happy.
To rno they are dry reading, but with him
they wero food of keen relish. I guess ho s
moved oft now, but ho must have a mighty
collection of old books with him, Ho has
bought enough in my storo to supply all tho
farmers In tho State with agricultural sta
tistics." At this point in tho conversation a small
boy camo in. He had In his hand a pair of
skates. He wanted to trade them for a
sled. "Do you know that every boy is a
born traderl" asked tho man of stonos,
after tho boy bad gone out. "Yes, sir. by
the time a boy Is five years old he begins to
trado and dicker and swap. It's general,
and I never saw a boy who wasn't so in
clined. They'll dicker anything. 1 havo a
chance to see something of It, Boforeico
and snow came they were all crazy for
marbles, and they'd swap any thiug for
them. Later it was skates they wanted,
and now the skating has gone they'ro trying
to swap their skates for sleds. So it goes.
Every thing in its season. It's fun to watoh
thera maneuver. Some of them aro pretty
bright fellows and make some sharp
trades." .
