The statement Is received with
surprise, if not incredulity, that, ex
cluding Alaska, Canada is a larger
country than the United States.
Yet such is tho case; for the United
States, prior to the purchase of Alas
ka, was included within 3,030,000
square miles, while Canada stretches
out to fill 3,470,302 square miles. It
would perhaps help to convey some
conception of the magnitude of Can
ada when the statement is mado
that the sun never sets on liritlsh
possessions. A still further rather
startling statement in relation to
Canada is, that, including the great
lakes which encircle it and which
penetrate it, and the rivers of enor
mous size and length which per
meate it, in il is found more than
one-half the fresh water of the en
tire globe. Such broad generalities
as these may well excite the atten
tion of the pcoplo of the United
States.
SriUNaFii;i.r), Mo., has a curiosity
a Guinea ncgrcss, who is believed
to bo 120 years old. She claims to
have helped make the first clearing
where tiio first house in Springfield,
Mo., now Is. The oldest inhabitants,
those who can look back forty or
fifty years, can lemember old Aunt
Hannah as being an old woman
oven then. She has middie-uged
grcat-grand-childrcn living there
now. She uses both whisky and to
bacco ' to excess. The question
naturally arises how much longer
would her life have been prolonged
if b1ii hud not ruined a fine consti
tution by over-indulgence m those
pernicious habits. It is at least a
warning to all those who are given
to those habits.
Tjik honor of originating arbor

tho first observance of that day oc

Governor Morton. Tho next year
it was established by statutory en

President Harrison's Kallicr-in-law.
Tho Rev. Dr. Scott, tho father or
Mrs. Harrison, still remains at his
desk in tho Pension Bureau. His
daughters and tho president himself
havo tried to make him believe that
thero is no longer any necessity for
his continuing to work. But ho
cannot be induced to surrender his
position. Shortly after tho election
Mrs. Harrison wrote to her father
asking him to resign, and saying
that as soon as they same to Wash
ington she would expect him to Hvo
nttho White House. This lotter
was accompanied by a note from
Gon. Harrison, who made tho same
request, and was written in such a
cordial strain as to leave no doubt of
its sincerity. But the old gentleman
wrote to his daughter saying that
whilo ho should bo glad to bo a fre
quent visitor at tho White House lie
could not think of spending the re
mainder of his days in idleness. So
every day Dr. Seott reaches his desk
at tho pension ollleo and works as
faithfully as any othwr clerk In the

Umnoviiig u Man's Shirt.
An oxtraordlnary and most laugh
able feat Is that of removing u
man's shirt before he is hardly aware
of it, and without taking oil either
his coat or vest.
To do' this successfully requires
considerable tact and very quick
actions on tho part of tho operator.
Ono professional magician Is so ox
pert that ho can produce this result
In fifteen seconds. An amateur
should soon acquire tho knack of
doing it in half a minute. Select
your subject, not a person of the
dudo make-up, with a skin-tight
suit, hut some good-natured, every
day sort of a fellow, whoso clothing
fits him easily.
Tell him to keep cool.
Then begin our operations in oar
nest by quickly pulling oil his collar
and necktie and unbuttoning his
shirt behind. Pull his shirt from
his brooches, up his back, and, with
a strong oxortlon, get it light over
his head.' This is by no moans hard.
You now havo It aorot his stomach.
Loosen his sleeves, and grasping tho
one nearest his hand, pull It oil' his
arm. You can do this hueotvwfully,
If ho limbers his arms, and doof not
rosNt ooino stretching woik on your
part. After ono arm is freed of the
sh'rt, it is easy to remove It from tho
other. The shirt will then come oil
to the astonishment of all.
As previously stated, thoellVotof

An Old llnllad.
, I ran across a song to-day,
A time-tried, worked-out ballad,
Thai lived its trill of life In days
When music wasn't valfd.
A sigh In Inchrlmoso it was,
A sob tbatwentash'llng
On tender waves of minor chord
Upon a sea of walling.
A world-worn bit of old-time life,
So quaint and yet so tender,
That made me face thejfar, far time.
When I was I and slender.
And as the keys Fobbed out the notes,
I saw the sweet-faced poem .
The Utile girl who sang It once
When nil of life wan proem.
Tho song was not a master's song,
Nordlvn's burst but hang ltl
It seemed to tneso sweet because
I kissed the lips thai san It.
