Victoria, B. O., March 20. In
the house yesterday, Mr. Higgins
brought forward an important reso
lution relating to railway exten
sion on Vancouver Island. Ho
showed that a lino 176 miles long
added to tho sovonty-llvu miles of
railway allready built, would con
nect tho strates of Fuca with tlio
northern end of tho island; that
with nine and a half miles of ferry
across tho straits, and a railway 210
miles In length, from tho straits to
Portland would bo brought within
threo and one-half days of Alaska,
only two days of which would bo
water travel. Ho added that there
were 000,000 acres of arable timber
and coal lands lying along tho pro
posed route, and urged the govern
ment to assist tho proect with n
money grant. Several members
spoke in support of tho resolution,
which was carried unanlously.
