Santa Barbara, March 19. An

and, becoming stranded at low tide,
could not get off. The mother whale
is sixty feet long and the young one
eight feet.
The discoyerers rigged up a wind
lass and hauled the carcasses upon
tho beach, and will try out oil.
They expect to get several hundred

light gray spots.

that further violence Is exppcted.

A Sensational Mory,
Richmond, Vti., March 19. Jas.
K. Bolton, an inmate of tho Con

says that when employed as a diver
in getting copper out of tho wrecked
confederate ram Merrirnao in 1873 lie
dived into the forecastle and found
the skeletons of two men manacled
to tho floor. Ho supposed they were
members of the crew incarcerated
for the violation of some rule.

Washington, March 19. Sen
ator Stewart, of the special commit
tee to investigate the subject of re
claiming arid lands, will enter upon

ing will bo held at St. Paul, then

man expects the trip will occupy six
weeks and cover most of the terri
tories. Don't Want Woliry.
Washington, March 19. Strong
opposition to tlie confirmation of
Lewis Wolfry to be governor or Ari
zona is aroused. The senate com
mittee on territories, to which tho
nomination was referred, has held
several meetings to consider the sub
ject, and It was agreed to postpone
action for a few days.
No Reciprocity.
Ottawa, March 19. Tho budget
debate was continued in Parliament
to-night. It Is thought that Cart
wright's resolution in favor of closer
trade relations with tho United
States will undoubtedly Do vetoed
down by thogovernmontsupporters,
but such action will hardly indicate
the feeling of the people

All Quiet at Samoa.
Washington, March 19. The
secretary of the navy has received
the following telegram from Com
mander KerapfT, acting comman
dant at tho Mare Island navy yard,
"Capt. Schoenmaker reports by let
ter, dated February 25th, tho arrival

Ordered to Haytl.
, New York, March 19. It is ru
mored at tho Brooklyn navy yard
that tho Yantlc has been ordered to
proceed to Hayti forthwith.
Good Old Granger.
They do occasionally get a joke on
the granger as tho following from
theS. F. Chronicle wltnesseth. Evi
dently this granger, knew the dif
ference between "before and after"
as did oue of our Oregon senators,
once upon a time:
But there is one mnn in San Fran
cisco whoso child-like faith in rural
simplicity and Integrity has received
a severe shock. This man is a
Western Addition butcher who had
occasion to purchaso a quautity of
baled hay recently. This hay seem
ed to "weigh up" pretty well con
sidering the size of tho bales, but
the purchaser concluded that this
must be owing to tho extraordinary
density with which the hay had
been compressed In packing it.
When the bales were opened, h xv
ever, this belief was quickly chang
ed. For snugly packed in tho cen
ter of each ho found all the way
from ten to a dozen largo stones and
masses of earth weighing many
pounds. A Chronicle, reporter who
happened along Inst evening found
a boy staggering under tho weight
of a mass of limestone which ho was
carrying to a near-by store to have
weighed, and which had just been
taken from a freshly opened bale.
Tho stones aro of fair quality as
stones go, and doubtless would prove
valuable under some circumstances,
but they aro absolutely worthless as
horse feed, and tho butcher In ques
tion is averse to puying u cent a
pound or thereabouts for vagrant
building material.
What section of tho country this
"hay" came from could not bo
learned, but It is by no means an un
common occurrence to have a ton
weight of the bales pan out 200 or
300 pounds of boulders and dirt.
Six ut a Illrtli.
A gynecologist of Milan is inter
ested in a rare case of late occurrence
at Castugnola, on tho Italian Swiss
frontier. The wife of the Syndic,
or Mayor, brought forth at a birth
four malo und two femalo children,
all of whom soon died. Tho same
woman now thirty-eight years old
had already distinguished herself
by giyiug birth to four children at
ono confinement und threo ut an
other. Snggestlon far Loggers.
Those interested iu logging on tho
Calipooia and other streams might
adopt the-following suggestion from
the Oregenlan: Lumbermen are in
hopes that the late rains will enable
them to float their logs out of some
of tho streams in this region. If not,
they will have to resort to building
dams across the streams, and by col
lecting a large amount of water and
turning It loose ut once, try und
wash the logs out. The practica
bility of this was demonstrated by
the breaking of Mr. G. W. Weld
ler's dam at Abernethy creek lust
year, which not only carried his
logs out of the creek, but came near
currying them to sea. Some aro
already prepared for such dams.

ADDITIONAL EDITORIALS.
John Scott Harrison, brother
of the president, has been having a
jolly tlmeiu Washington. Ho is
smaller than tho president and
younger, and they havo many points
of resemblance. Brother John
wears a full beard, and tho expres
sion of his lace is like Benjamin's.
His homo is In Kansas City.
A New York correspondent says
ho has reliable authority in stating
that Mrs. Cleveland will make a
mild venture Into literature soon af
ter her retirement to prlvato life.
Her undertaking will bo a modest
oue, consisting of a magazine
article, which, however, may evolve
into two before It Is finished.
Among the agencies which havo
helped to build up tho peninsula of
Florida, aro certain trees, Hko tho
mangrove and cypress, which grow
on land more or less under water.
Like tho coral builders, they have
worked slowly, but In thousands
of centuries tho change wrought
would bo great. It Is altogether
probable that tho thousands of tree-
covered "islands" in tho overglades
and Big Cypress weio onco man
grovo thickets, and that the present
mangrove islands will In time be
added to the mainland.
In 1892 the democrats cannot, win
with tho 153 votes of tho South and
the added 51 votes of Now York,
New Jersey and Connecticut. The
electoral college now has 401 votes,201
elects. In 1892 tho four now states
will add 13 votes to tho college, mak
ing the total 414 necessary to elect,
208. So that not only will Now
York and New Jersey with the solid
South fail to elect, but oven Con
necticut added would leave them
short. In other words, if in 1892 they
hold thoSouih solid, held New Jersoy
and Connecticut and recapture New
York, they will still fail to elect a
democratic president.
groping after truth.
The human Intellect Is s'till com
pelled to bo content with mere hy
potheses as to tho origin of our own
and other planetary globes. All
cosmogonies, from tho legend of the
savage, who Imagined that the
earth sprang from a sneezing lit of
his God, down to the theory of the
great Buflbn, according to which
tho planets of tho solar system are
tho fragments launched Into space
by a collision between a comet and
tho sun, tho vain conjectures ol tho
ancients, and the ideas struck out by
modem science, aro all alike, mere
suppositions, more or less pluuslblo
and Ingenious.

Ono of tho oldest things In th's
old capital of China is its nows
paper. The Pekln Oazetto has boon
published almost dully for 800 years.
It is tho oldest nowsyaper in tho
world. It was read by tho Chinese
centuries before America was dis
covered. Its first copies were struck
offhundreds of years before Guten
berg gavo printing to Europe, und
it was lu oxlstanco 000 years before
tho Frankfort Gazette, tho first
daily newspaper of our civilization
began Its publication in 1015. Age
has, however, produced no more
change upon it than upon tho
Chinese people, and Its contents are
much tho sumo to-day as they were
when It was founded in tho dark
ness of tho middle ages. Tts method
of printing Is tho same, und It Is
still set up from movable types of
wood und struck oft' In dark, low
rooms by the long finger-nailed
hands of these almond-eyed Celes
tials. Still, It is tho most aristocrat
ic paper in tho world, and the
Chinese emperors of tho past have
been Its editors. It l tho organ of
the Cblneso government and It 1h
simply a record of oUlcLil acts and
