A prohibition petition lias been
discovered iu the archives of North
Carolina from King Hagler, king
of the Catawba Indians. It is
dated 1750. "I desire a stop may be
put to the selling of strong liquor
by the white people to my people
especially near tho Indiaus. If tho
white people make strong drink let
them sell it to one another or drink
it in their own families. This will
avoid a great deal of mischief which
wU otherwise happen from my
people getting drunk and quarreling
with tho white people."
