Verbal ritfalls.
A nice, very useful little book Ison
the table of the Journal, published
by Cf. V. Burden, yractfse, N. Y.
It contains some fifteen hundred
words commonly misused, and, by
studying what Is said about them
one will get a clear idea as to hun
dreds of other words misused In
talking and writing. It will estab
lish a habit of criticism which is
much needed. For Instance, "capa
cious" is a word used fdr "large,"
ns a "capacious rent In hiscosturue."
mm word means ability to hold or
coutalu. Used Improperly It sounds
'like au Irishman's definition of a
net as "holes tied together by a
striug." So, character is wrongly
used for reputation, when character
describes what one is and reputation
what one is esteemed to be, you can
say "be ls'a bad character; ho has a
bad reputation1." Sanitary and 'san
atory aro used "indiscriminately,
whereas they have different mean
ings. Also tho use of differ with
aud from is" distinctly pointed 'out.
And so on. Tho work discloses a
thousand err'6rs in common use.
The book is as valuable for Svhat it
suggests as for what it expresses, aud
will be worth a hundred , times its
cost to any 'one who uses'it. ' '

A Ghost After Ills Shirt.
A man of Findlay, Ohio, was
killed over at Toledo. He left a red
shirt in his'room and his room mate
appropriated it." Yells and screams
after midnight aroused the inmates
of tho hotel who lound the poor
devil frightened almost to death,
swearing the ghost of the shirt
Owner came after his property; A
great laugh was raised at him and
another1 person took the shirt and
went to bed. Here is the denoue
ment as given by a special: "At
about the same hour that tho pre
vious disturbance had alarmed the
boarding house, the inmates were
again disturbed by yells and screams
of tho most terrlfyiug character,
and in a moment afterward the
young man with the haunted shirt
in his hand dashed down stairs as if
a ghost was after him, and took
refuge under a table in the kitchen.
He, too, declared he had been visit
ed by the former owner of the red
shirt, whose auger had been intensi
fied by the second attempt to appro
priate his intimate piece of wearing'
apparel.
"Now the garment has been hung
in. the garret, but the boarders are
letting the house almost en masse."
A Wise Merchant.
Thegreatmerchant, Stewart, grew
rich by his judicious advertising.
But he did not advertise as do our
Salem merchants. No, he told peo
ple what lie had aud for how much.
As Geo. A. Townsend in the Boston
Herald says:
Stewart grew rich upon a small
matter which can make many an
other man rich if he will not .forget
it; he marked his prices and he ad
vertised his prices. The difference
between an advertisement with or
without prices affixed is all tho dif
ference between a placard and a
news matter. Here is the card of
"Smithers & Lathers, white goods."
the lady of the house reads this and
can make no remark upon it. But
the next advertisement of Robinson
& Jones says, "White bito as low
as two cents." That Is Information I
and .the good lady immediately tells
it to her daughter and husband ami
starts down the street at the hour
of eleven.
The above hint to the wise mer
chant of to-day ought to be suf
ficient. Live mill Let I. lve.
The Examiner compares tho sa
loon to a mad dog, and discusses
how to deal with it in a vigorous
way. It sayfl: "There aro five
ways of dealing with tho dog, one
is to let him run loose and bite
whomsoever he pleases; ttiat is free
whisky. Another, feto tie .him jip
with a long chain, and to tax his
owner $50; that Is low license. An
other Is to .shorten, his chain aud
charge a good round sum; thai is
MgU license. Ano'thet' is to 'drive
him out of town Into the next' Vown;
that Is lqcal option. But tho only
effective way 1b' & cut life tall off
close behind his iears; that Is 'prohi
bition." ' But a 'majority of the
people who .make laws don't think
so, and until wo convert heni to
our ways of thinking the dog must
live. t

their troubles. To all those afflicted we
