A NAVAL SITK.
A writer in the Aatoriau gives iv
description of Young's Bay, which
if accurato would make it one of tho
finest points for a navy yard to no
found in tho United Statcb, as well
ns ono of tho best situations for a
great harbor. Besides thoro are sev
eral channels a mile long more or
less and from eight to ten hundred
feet -vide with a depth at low tide of
from twenty to fifty feet, leading to
other harbors, "ono of which tar ex
ceeds anything that Portland can
boast of. In all those waters tho
bottom lias such a soft, light silt so
easily moved out, that those chan
nels and harbors can bo widened
and deepened with almost no labor."
Tho writer claims that this grand
opportunity has always boon over
looked and depreciated. If it is as
described n great city will yet rise
there.
WUVT
It is said by somo of tho Portland
papers that "tho greater per cont of
the Immigrants pass through hero
and go to tho Sound." Oregon is
and lias been, tor soveral years, quite
as well advertised its tho Sound
country. Tho pamphlets furnished
by tho board of immigration, and
of agriculture and by real estate
agents of Oregon are tho most com
plete, ininuto and satisfactory ever
sent out from any country. Tho
deshable immigrant makes Ids way
speedily out of tho city and into tho
country, to tho smaller towns, thero
to prospect where ho can get somo
land to oultlvate, or mayhap a cicap
homo whoro ho can begin his trade.
About ono half of tho Inhabitants of
Oregon arc already in Ita towns.
And by liberal legislation wo must
invito tho homo builders of the
country hero. This wo have not
done.
WILL NOT DOWN.
Somo Ideas will not down. You
may inako war on them, you may
leglilato against tlom, you may
formulate your baibarlsm into a
creed and demand worship under it,
you may watoli ovory remonstrating
Up and crush tho life out of tho
thinker and ralso your Idiotic nono
eenso into a Bhlbboleth or an Idol
and demand mierlflco and incense
but tho very stones will riso up and
ory aloud against it and oven tho
winds will laugh at ypu. You can
not make holiness of rot, wisdom of
Idotlo drivel, nor wrong, right.
Tun membership of all tho farm
ers organlatiotiH la near ono and a
half millions; of tho Knights of
Labor, tho engineers and tho like
xoeoui ono million. Thoy could
rule this nation If combined and In
unison. Tho truata und otjior mon--opollos
rirto because of their aecrey
and dotormlnatlou. TJielr batteries
aro all masked ami tlielr, attacks uro
from ambush, .wljo tlm forniora
Jind laborers cry out from tho houso
tops, puss.tjujpdorlng rypflivca in
puulio hulls, Bquarea ami groveaof
the country.
Ik any one dlw under tho so tailed
Christian Bcleuce treatment the
matter 1h telegraphed to .all the
world by tho Press dispatcher 5 but
not a word is said of tho tens
of thousands who dallv dlo
under 'tho gtaier methods. JIpw
m'erlt did leak out that President
(iarfleld was actually permitted to
dlo under thobtuudorlug negligence
of several highly famous, lnoirUbly
rosixKitalo practitioners of tho only
gonulno, puro nnd uuudultcrated
bcliool.
ANOTHER ritODIQY.
Oscar Moore, tho colored prodigy
of Texas, la but four years old. As
an nrlthmctican ho Is a phenomenon
equal to the celebrated Qolburn.
The most profound calculatlpns are
mndo by him Instantly. Hs, judg
ment Is supernaturally good. At
the public exhibition in Chicago
printed cards containing 1,000 ques
tions, with tho correct answers, were
distributed among tho audience;
they read questions at random, and,
tne boy promptly leave the correct
answer. lie told the population of
China, Siberia and many other for
eign regions, reciting many facts In
history, repeating the alphabet back
ward and rendering a poem with
all tho tone and correctness of a
rhetorician, out, of course, with no
idea of the meaning. He counted
up to twenty in Latin, "Welsh, Chi
nese, Danish and Polish, and then,
with all comicalities of the burlesque
stage, delivered a speech on tho
tariff.
Eumou has it that Bussel Sage,
Jay Gouid and one or two other emi
nent railroad operators conlemplato
gradually withdrawing their funds
from their present investments, pre
paratory to heavy operations In real
estate. Exchange.
And rumor is right, thougli It
may bo a little premature. Long
ago it was foretold that just as soon
as It becaino worth their while, the
monopolists would combine to own
all the land. Land ever has and
ever shall bo tho foundation of aris
tocracy", whether of blood or wealth.
The time Is coming when all that
class now known as farmer must
become tenants. Small holders will
bosquee.cd out just as small rail
roads aro now served. Up to this
date the monopolists have proposed
to have others pay the taxes on land
while they took nil, the surplus pro
ducts. The situation is changing.
Nothing Is so reliable as the land.
By a preconcerted arrangement
the regulars of the medical fraterni
ty are making war on those they
call quacks ajl over tho Union. The
center and original starting point of
the war seems to have been Boston.
A bill similar to that which just
passed tho Oregon legislature Is now
being fought about in the Massachu
setts state house. Vast sums of
money aro put up on each side.
Tho regulars have petitions signed
by first families who represent some
fifty millions of dollars. Terhaps it
is vain to protest and show that all
legislation is folly. It becomes a
dead letter, is evaded, or If not, Its
effects doiuorali.o tho people inas
much as it directs them to dopend
on tho law and police instead of their
own judgment.
GEOiian Catlin, tho celebrated
painter of Indian portraits nnd
scones of aboriginal life and author
ot books about Indian life, was tho
originator of t,ho Idea ot a National
Park. In his book "Eight Years,"
he elaborates tho Idea and declares
ho "would ask no other monument
to my memory than tho reputation
of having been tho founder of such
an institution."
Tin: new Sonato is 80 repnbllcau

republican members will enter tho

Thr longest speech over made,
'tis said, was by Leonard McClure
