Col. Lee Kemored.
Tho tclcKranu to-day announces
that W. H. Beadle of Yankton, Da
kota, has been appointed superin
tendent of tho Cbemawa Indian
school, vice Col. John Lee, removed.
The simple announcement will
be a surpriso to a few, while to
many It is but the loug looked for
result of tho Investigation conducted
during tho fall and winter by Gen.
'Gflrdon. Tho Chemawa Iridjau
school is an institution of no mean
proportions orimportance and should
have for a superintendent one who
la a leader and of executivo ability.
Mr. Bcadle'a appofntment is on the
last days of tho waning administra
tion. It may bo that ho will not
retain the honors for long.
We Have .o Itand.
No matter what her reputation
may have been in tho past, it is a
shame 'that Salem now has no brass
hand. Wo have good talent, flue
Instruments and uniforms, hut are
without a band This is not as it
should be and it is hoped those who
arc Interested in tho matter will
inovo in tho directldn of effecting a
reorganization of this kind and wo
trust to see a good band here beforo
many days.
A Mean 'Thief.
Everybody terms a mean thief tho
person who steals a newspaper
fiom its owner's door. John Veatch
says this class of petty thieve is
giving him lots of trouble. Thoy
havo selected several boxes from
which thoy abstract tho Capital
Jo'ujinai. every evening. Justice
will bo meted out to them if di&
covercd in tho act. The subscriber
to a paper wants it and tho law pio
tccts carriers.
Tbe Fish Udder.
This matter Is of Interest to allwho
live above the fall. It is truly Won
derful to think how matters of such
importance are neglected in this re
gion. The following from the Port
land Welcome is timely, and the Al
bany Democrat seconds tho motien:
A few years since the Oregon legis

or for disbursement for that purpose.
The money came to his hands, and
there never has been such flsh-'ad-der
constructed, other than a pre
tended attempt by a contractor for
$1350, and lasted only a few weeks
as a show, which wo are informed
has not been settled for within $300.
Those interested in tne culturo of
salmon in these waters, especially of
tho upper Willamette, should agitate
'the present legislature to Investigate
this omission and demand an ac
count of this fish-ladder fund.
