ness of history. Pass on but a few
years more and Rome began to be
heard of. Rut nil her grandeur is
comprised within the few years from
the end of Carthage to the reign of
Constantino tho Great only a few
hundred years. Soon after came the
invasion of tho savages and Rome's
downfall, when night and darkness
settled over all tho world, save a
few towns of Italy and Asia Minor.
A thousand years of darkness and
sleep, brief and eventless as a night
of our own sleep I Then Europe be
gan to awake. A now civilization
based on ideas of Mongol nomads
who had migrated toward western
Europe ideas of domestic and polit
ical life the ideas of Buddha and of
Christ as to tho brotherhood and
equally of mankind.
Yet, during all these times, tho
earth Iiiih drunk the blood of mil
lions by war. War has raged inces
santly. Through what awful scenes
has t-ociety emerged I 'Tls onlv
within a century that tho now en
lightenment 1ms got a foothold.
Till of late the civilized man was
hardly a mutch .ignlnst tho savage
and ho was obliged to occupy
islands or peninsulas and walled
towns. And now eivli.ation begins

little seed that developed amid
Asian deserts and Gorman wilds Is
spreading. Its nature ditVcrs en
tirely troni tho old civilization. It
abhors slavery, respects woimn and
proclaims tho equality of all. In
ono respect It dltlers from tho past
namely, In Its no of labor saving
means. And now by means of tho
general ditluslonof knowledgo noth
ing is over lost, everything Is im
proved upon mid all tilings seem
possible. Rut may it not bo that
tho way is not quite so clear and

The town of Lincoln, Nebraska,
tho capital of that state, supports
oightecu papers, besides several
monthly publications. Many of
these aro dailies. Surely balcm
ought to support two. Stinginess
in taking your own papers is not a
nice trait. Men who spend from
twenty-five to fifty cents per day
for cigars actually are amazed if you
ask them to take three or four pa
pers. A business man who has
several customers will take one copy
of tho JouitNAL and grunt at pay
ing fifteen cents per week. Ask
him to take three or four copies and
he looks amazement. No wonder
Lincoln lias forty thousand inhabi
tants. Hastings, Neb., when it had
three thousand people sustained two
newspapers liberally. It now has
thirteen thousand and its people are
proportionally liberal advertisers
and subscribers.
Tin: Astoria Pioneer makes sonic
very sensible remarks against the
practice of using fish traps and
other destructive devices to catch
salmon. In early days this was
well enough, but as the country
settles we must sternly prohibit all
destructive modes of catching game
and fish. There is a class of idle
people who arc ever ior killing tho
goose to get the egg and that clas3
rapidly bottles in the country.

seems that the greed of "Capt." John
Mullan can never be satisfied, for to
my certain knowledge ho has been
before tho Oregon Legislature many
times with bills for services rendered
that are not by any means small,
and no ono knows who employed
him as our claim agent. Ho pre
sents a claim for services to tho pres
ent Legislature of several thousand
dollars. Tho Pacific Rural Press
has the following about this leech of
the public crib: "Resisting Robbery

impudent effrontery of such persist
