bo changed aud Barnes' readers and
Fish's arithmetics adopted as tho
tsxt book for tho next four years.

poor people of tho state to build up
rich publishing corporations. The
people should rise en masse and pe
tition tho next legislature to take
action upon this matter of a change
of school books. Something must
U3 done to protect tho public and
tho next legislature cannot all'ord to
ignoro tills matter. It is a crying
necessity that something bo done.

the legislature and oust this glaring
fraud from our state and theioby
win for yourselves lasting honors in

Illinois has a law ou her statue
books tbat some of the judges do
not propose winking at. At Mont
leello Inst week Judge Hughes'
instruction to the grand Jury of
Cole County caused quite a commo
tion. He lnsructed the grand jury
to bring In indictments against ev
ery ono who had bet on the election
whether he be a democrat, Republi
can or Prohibitionist, and to sum
mon all candidates who run for of
fice before the jjraud iury. It has
been ascertained that a large num
ber of tho present grand jury cither
won or lost bets on tho late election
and the question is, will he order a
special venire to Indict tho grand
jury?
To multiply 15 by 15 and tho pro
duct by Itself and so on for fifteen
times would take a man ten hours
a day 300 days in the year forflftcen
years.
i'roflt on Prunes.
Some almost marvelous reports of
the cash income from prunes are ap
pearing in the papers with such
minuteness of detail as to compel
belief. Tho Tulare Times tells of
results obtained near Visalia by B.
C. Anderson. Five years ago liia
land was in its raw state without a
fruit tree on it. Last year he ob
tained 5900 gross per acre from the
Sliver and French prune. This year
he will rccelvo for three acres of
prunes and plums?2,700. Ho plants
108 trees to the acre. He says the
trees must bo grafted or budded on
plum stock ono to two years old.
Ilesays the trees will yield ten
pounds each tho fourth year, sixty
tho fifth, 120 or moro the sixth, af
ter that from 140 to 300. Last year
ho dried twenty tons from COO trees
(six acres) and sold them in sacks
for R0O0.
The above Is cited too as nn illus
tration of the almost incredulous
reports of largo margin In prune
culture in Soutli California, and
many more could be produced witli
equal effect, but it is not necessary.
That fabulous yields of prunes aud
apples, and many other kinds of
fruit, accompanied witli like profit
are becoming moro and more general
and cannot but have a very stimu
lating effect upon the fruit industry
all along the Pacific slope. Here in
Oregon immense yields of fruit have
been chronicled. California does
not pretend to compete with Oregon
in its production of prunes and ap
ples, and when its people learn the
science of growing these two pro
ducts alone, tho profit per acre will
bo as startling as thoso cited above.
An orchard of deciduous fruit will
yield as abundantly In tills county
as any land under the sun, and of a
much richer llavor than sonio sec
lions. The foreign market oilers as
much to the fruit-growers of Oregon
as it does to thoso of California or
any other state, and there Is noth
ing left but to prepare tho way for
a successful growing of that variety
of fruit for which our soil Is especially
adapted. Give tho orchard proper
care and It will yield big profits.

city shortly after the conclusion of
Moody's meetings and continue the
evangelistic work for an indefinite
season. Mrs. Mallory's nanio lias

ers, as well as being an eloquent
speakor.

A. Hilton of Washington D. C. will
be here about the 10th of January to
hold a four days mooting. Major

Market for Prunes.
It is understood that tho East
ern cities on tho Atlantic seaboard
have never been canVassed for tho
salo of Oregon prunes, and they
actually know nothing about them.
New York and other great cities
naturally should prove to bo the
best market for all excellencies.
Tho Oregon prune surpasses In
quality any grown in Europe or
America, and when introduced to
Eastern customers a market will bo
afforded for moro than wo can raise
in the next ten years, and wo ven
ture the assertion, says an exchange,
that prices will never bo lower than
at present right here whero they
rango from ten to twelve cents per
pound. It Is strange, but true, that
no business effort seems to havo
been niado to Introduce our cured
product nt tho East, and there is tho
best market for such goods. Mill
ions of trees aro being plauted and
their products will soon appear, for
