Dora Blako the portly demi-monde who conducted a house of 111 fame near the Clicmckcte and just back of Fisher's livery stable, is dead. Sho committed suicide by the mor phine route. Saturday evening she took eightor ten grains of the fatal drug and died on Sunday morning, after a night of wild dolerium. Few words are devoted to her. Tho mor al is peinted: tho wages of sin is death. Her life of shame became to her a burden and she hud not the courage to live it out. She is gono to a grave over which there will bo fow to mourn. Once sho was hon ored and respected, perhaps, but her steps were confined in the broad path so long that death Is acceptable. Sho lias been dead to all save shame so long that tho fleeting of the spirit and tho casting away of tho earthly robo aro scarcely noted. Tho coro ner's inquest resulted In tho return ing of a verdict of "death by her" her own hands." Tn the absonce of1 Coroner Byland Justice Chase conducted the Inquest. The true name of tho woman was Laura A. Thompson and she was about thirty years of age. Some More Smallpox. From St. Louis comes tho news that another caso of smallpox has developed. This time it is In tho family of Victor LaChappcl, thcaf illcted ono being a son John who is fourteen years old. Ho is supposed to have- contracted tho dlseaHO wbilo at tho houso delivering provisions to tho sick. In a fow days after his last visit to the houso of his undo Aimull LaChappol, whore there aro three patients, lie was tckou down with it and was at onco removed and placed with tho other sick ones. That this Grange isonnosed to tho appropriation of any more of tho fund set apart for the state agricultural college at Cor vallls while the title or tho same is in doubt, and while tho school re mains under sectarian control, and while tho board of regents aro not practical farmers. That in our opinion tho present farm of 30 acres is two small for the u'so of the students of such an instltutiou, 100 acres being tho least amount or land requisite for the purpose, in giving the students a practical Knowledge of agricultural industries. Cut Ills E;e Out. M. Yoder arrived in tho city last night from his homo near Woodburn. bringing with him a young son who is suffering untold agonies, tho result of an accident that happened him. Tho boy Is but seven years of ago, and ono day about a month ago lie was cutting a stick with a kuifo, holding the st'ck in front of and drawing tho knifo toward himself, when tho blado slipped aud was driven Into ills eye. Since that time tho boy has been In great agony and to-day liis father is hero to have a careful examination of tho eye made. It is thought tho pupil is lost, as the knife could not very easily have missed it. Tho right oyo Is tho ono injured aud tho left ono is so weak from irritation that unless some thing is dono at onco Mr. Yoder fears tho sight of It will als6 bo lost. Mr. Yoder Is a recent arrival in Oregon, having readied tho state iu November. Ho is from Missouri and is a brother of our county super intendent of schools. Cootldence In Salem. Jurap-off-Joe, the name of a stream in Southern Oregon, received its name fro-i tho trapper, McLeod, who led tho first white expedition overland to California in 1832. They camned one night on this stream, but Joe McLoughlln, who was out hunting did not como in until after dark, and, not knowing that the camp was on a bluff, he stepped over tho c Jge of It in tho darkness, and fell ouite a distance below. Ho received injuries that could not be cured, and died in a few years, but from this circumstance tho creek re ceived its name. A Suit Over Thlrij-lTe Cents.
