Now that tliu great national struggle is over and victory perches proudly, dlllantly on our banner, tho smoke of battle will clear away and the common overy-day aifalrs of llfoand uuhIuihs will assume their even tenor. Tho Cai'ITAI. Journal won tho battle but our extreme modesty will not permit us to dwell at length on that topic. Our bump of Holf-esteem, however, Is HUtllclont ly well developed to allow us to say Unit tho Jouhnai. Is gaining friends and patrons every day. It Is true, our past career has been a rather checkered ono. Yo changed management too often, perhaps. But It Is of the present to wish more particularly to allude. Under tho present management the Journal is gaining lost ground, holding what It previously acquired and making new continents. By conducting a live, fearless, newsy paper for tho people now on earth wotrint to merit ami hope to re ceive the liberal and united patron ago of tho public. Tho muruhunts and lnilue men of Saluin will receive a call from our advertising manager, and It lecx pacted they will respond with good ads. Our subscription list is now such that we enn guarantee an nd placed in the Journal to be worth Its weight in gold. Tho newspapers of a town are faultless indicators of tho life and business of a town. They are al ways carefully working for its suc cess and guarding its best Interests. In fact, they arc forever on the vigil. Therefore, we hay, they should be encouraged and sustained. We boom tho town and assist you in your every labor. Is it not meet and proper that you should at least give our solicitor an encouraging re ception? This much is duo us. We are loaded for all future booms and the success of Salem is your success. Now is tho time to adver tise and subscribe. CIIAICM.S OF AN KDITOIl'S I.II'K. Ono of the beauties and charms of an editors life, says an exchange, is in his dead-heading it on all oc casions. No one who has never tasted the sweets of that bliss can bjgin to takc in his glory and huppiness. He does $100 worth of advertising for a'rallroad company, gets a "pabs";for a year, rides $25; and then he, isjllookcd upon as a dead-head, or a half-blown dead beat. He "nulls" a concert troupe $10 worth and gets $1 "compli nientaries, " and Is thus passed "free." If tho hall Is crowded he Is begrudged tho room ho occupies, for If his conipllmcutarics were pay ing tickets the troupe would be so much more in pocket. He blows and pulls a church festival free to any desired extent, and does the poster printing at half rates, and merely gets a "thank you" for it. It goes as a part of his duty as an editor. He does more work gratuitously for the town and com munity than all tho rest of the population put together and gets curses for it all, while in many instances where a man donates a few dollars for tho Fourth of July, a base ball game or a church, he is gratefully remembered. He "passes free," you know. Thk invention of tho phonograph ami grapophono has brought out tho singular fact that fow personal if any, know tho sound of their own voice. When several persons in succession have spoken into one of these machines, each may recognize In Its reproductions tho voico of a friend or acquaintance, but docs not identify his own. An analogous phenomenon has been observed in the matter of sight by photograph ers, who can often witisfy in a like ness every ono but tho original. Thus it t-eems that wo not only do not seo ourselves as others seo us but we tlo not hear ourselves as oth ers hear us. Spiiakinci of tho election, Senator Stanford says : "Tho victory of the republican party has certainly been a sweeping one It settles very em phatically tho Issue of protection versus free trade. General Harrison will mako an admirable president He is a man of strong convictions, though eminently reasonable. No power on earth, however, would force him to take any acilon which ho believed wrong. lie is a practi cal, cool, common sense statesman, who improves on acquaintance." A I'Uhk Hying machine is hnpos- Ible, osserU l'rof. LeConte. All that wo can expect all that scien tists do expect Is,bv skilful combin ation of tho balloon principle with the true Hying principal, to mako terlal navigation possible in moder ately favorablo weather in other words, to make a locomotlvo bal loon, or terlal swimming machine. That something really useful of tills kind will eventually bo made there can lie no reasonable doubt. In tho centennial celebration of tho Inauguration of Gen.Gcorgo Wash ington as president of tho United States, which will occur In New York city April 80, 1SS9 Gen. Uon jamlu Harrison will participate as Gen. Washington's centennial euo cebsor.
