Four miles iiortli of Salem is the Keizer school house, nnd the board of directors have dismissed school on account of the smallpox scare. One of the patients who, the other day, was attacked near Sheridan, spent last Friday arid Saturday night at David Guerson's, and he complained at the tllne of not feel ing well. It is feared others have been exposed, but nothing had de veloped at last reports. A Hood Prevention. Now that smallpox is in the t'ountry-ln our very midst we might nay is the time to prepare the system for the worst. Perhaps the best thing that could be done would be to occasionally cat u lemon. The acid of lemon is the best regulator and cleanser known. It has been the. means of defending many people from a siego of the smallpox. John nd Jonathan. Last night at thp opera house Rev. Among tlioe sales were several ulte largo ones, there being one for 4,oOO and several of nearly fr3,000. Prices are firm and the real estate men tell us demands are good. Every day they havo lozeris of In quiries and are kept busy all the time answering letters as to prices and showing new coiners over the country. To set at rest the many rumors current on the streets regarding thore being several cases of smallpox in Salem, a representative of this paper has visited the doctors of the uay aim is lniormeit more are no cases. He went crazy over land matters. For tho larceny of a horse, James Tigard comes to the penitentiary from Baker county for a term of two and one-half years. This is surely delightful weather. In nearly two weeks there has been but on day of rain, and even then the roads did not become heavy. A large number of Odd Fellows from the east aro expected to pass through here to-morrow morning. They will stop a short time in Port laud. N. It. Doty, living fifteen miles south of Salem, is among the num ber who voted for old Tippe in 1810 and will do the same as near as he can this year. The penitentiary convict, O'Brien, who recently became m charmed with his own whistling as to refuse to cease, is now improving. Out door work brings him around all right again. Among our new advertisers to-day tiro the" White Corner" and Willis & Chamlierlin. The former havo an unusually fine lino of dry goods, etc., whilo the latter offer some fine bargains in realty. Salem's Chinese iauudrymcii have all entered nto a' combine and raised the price. Being great imitators and having learned of the white men's oil and other trusts these importa tions from the flowery kingdom formed a pool. t ' ' Granaries along the Willamette river are already graining udder their heavy weight of wheat, stored in waiting for river navigation to begiu. Occasionally for s-onie months Dr. Gilbert has hail many malicious slurs and annoying atlnoks made against him through the nieduim of the Mercury. Their frequent oc currence admonished him that he eouiu no longer jHTinit ttiem to pass unnoticed. Having paid no atten tion to the first innuendoes, sup posing they would ceao when the instigator's spleen had been suf ficiently vented, he took no action in the matter. But at last, driven to desperation by the repeated thrusts upon his character as a man mid a physician, he preferred chnrges against the managers. The Mercury's article upon which tho first suit was instituted charged Dr. Gilbert with being hero under on assumed name; with having been n lawyer in Wisconsin some years nge: with having left between two days with another man's wife; with edscrtlng her afterwards; with be ing n quack; with being a bilk: and on several statements of a similar nature. We are permitted to make the fol lowing extracts from a letter written by Mr. Win. Cornell of Salem, who has been making a tour of the east ern states since July 1st, and at pro is at Alexandria, Ohie: "Politics is u live subject in these parts, and there will be a heavy voto polled this fall. It is everywhere talked about, and in almost every large town and city the likenesses of the respective candidates of the two leading political parties are printed on canvas and stretched across sonic street 'for the gaze of passers by for their admiration or disgust. "A good many amusing stories are told, and I will funilslr one which occurred in my hearing. Just as the train was pulling out of Wash ington a few days ago this colloquy between two democrats : Ono said I 'was bor a democrat and havo always voted the democratic ticket and w'hen the war broke out T shoul dered my musket and fought for the Union,' und here 1 havo a crippled arm to show for It. I voted for Cleveland, but 1 did not know at tlitj time that he was only a hung- man und not fit for u president, and if I get forgiven for that I will not do the like again. I am going to vote for Den Harrison. I live in West Virginia, and that state is going to go republican.' He then wound up by saying that every flock of sheep on tho hilltops of Western Virginia was crying ba-a-a-a at Cleveland." SHU li fort.
