Rich In Its agricultural resources in itu cultivated and uncultivated innds, In Ita water powers, and iiilnurub); rich in ita colleges and schools of learning, and with a climate unsurpassed for its salubrity, it presents to the Immigrant from the overcrowded slates, where cold winters and hot summers, witli terrible cyclones, prevail, who cornea to tho coast with some means, advantages that no other countv In Orccon possesses. Much lias been written of thif western country thut requires u stretch of tho imagination to com prehend, and numerous complaints tire heard from tho class who have been misled by them, so in this brief sketch tlie writer desires to avoid exngeration as to ita present and proBjiectlve advantages, asking uioso n tno east into wnoso nanus this may fall particularly those who have their eyes dlrectea towards this coost-to pcruso It carefully, feeling that it Is not written to lure immigrants within Its borders, but only us n truthful discrlptlon of a & IS ,,, ,. ianu which, 11 it uoes not, -now i:.w p. in. iiuiK uuu uujiuy, ujuiuiiin wiiiuii iw uosom weaun anu resources equai to any other country on the Pacific eiflo of tho Ilocky mountains. ISOUNDAKIBa. Marion county is bounded on the north by tho Willamette river and But to creek which separates it from Clackamus county; on the east by Clackumos county and tho Cascade mountains, which separate it from Wasco county; on tho south by tin Santlnm river and tho north fork of tho Suntiam, separating it from Linn county .and on the west by the Willamette river. l'lIYBICAL FOHMATIOK. Tho county contains, including valley, prairie and mountain lands, ubout 000,000 acres. Thero are two main divisions, the mountain and tho valley. The latter extends from tho "Willamette river to tho foot of tho Cascade mountains, u distance of about fif teen miles. The mountainous portion contains some fourteen townships of mohtlj unsurveyed land; lying In n strip twelve miles north und south bj forty mllefl east ana west, una com prises all clussea of land, from rich narrow valleys in tho passes, up through till tho grades of rolling, hilly und broken, to that of rock bouiid canyons mid inaccessible craggy peaks. It Is generally heavily timbered, und in tho near future will bo viilunblo for Its lumber sui plics. Tliese hills and mountains afford u wonderful summer runge for stock, und many of tho more en terprising formers are availing them selves of this opportunity, and when tho cold frosts of autumn approach, the stock uro brought out to fresh pastures, thus enabling them to sur vive tho whiter storms with little euro. C1IIKAT APVANTAQKS. A decided advantage Marion coun ty has over many others Is tho dl vtirslllcd farming Interest thut can bo curried on tnrought tho entire year; notwithstbndlug this Is u wet ellumto during tho winter months, tho uplands uro seldom too wet to work, und long before tho prairie fanners uro through with their seed lug, the hill farmer Is preparing for his summer work. And yet tho low lands uro much preferred by ninny; tho yield per uoro Is generully greater, anil jxirhaim less hibor Is re quired to place tho soil In proper condition for crops; und then should tho season prove dry, tho bottom lands uro sure to bring tho best crop. No l letter farming land can bo found In tho United States than that oil tho noted Howell prairie. Krcneh pnilrlo, Santlum prulrlo und Salem prairie. Tho soil of these are wonderfully productive. With gtKxl cultivation, forty bushels of wlieut and sixty of oata per acre can bo readily securvil. KAi'ii.rriKS von maiuckt.
