tni)lation, Incident to the prosper
ity of tho whole people. Without
prosiKjrouB manufacturers wo can
not nave prosperous fanners or pros
perous operative., and therefore is
protection sought for the manufac
turers, not as recipients, but as dis-w-'ininiitors
of tho wealth. Protec
tion Is not for u few. not only for n
liftjorlty ; it is for all the peoplo of
tins umuid MiatcH
This argument would have weight
if tho manufacturers fulfilled their
ascribed trust. IJut us "dissemina
tors of wealth" they do not render
themselves conspicuous. Instances
are increasing on every nanu
of manufacturers piling up
their millions, who when their
work people demand a rate of wage
HUfllelent to support their families,
turn them adrift and till their places
with "the pauper labor of Kurope."
It is (old of Andrew Carnegie, the
millionaire Scot, who (ook IJlaine
on his coaching (our through his
native land, that his dividends
from tho largo iron establishment,
in which lie Is a heavy stockholder,
amounted in one year (o $1,5(X),000,
and yet he discharged his hands
when (hey refused lo accept lower
wages, and (ook on a force of
Hungarians. Bitch evidences of
MiHIshiiosH deprive (he argument of
(ho Inler-Oceaii of all point, and
dislocate tho comfortable correla
tion which the wrlier assumes
to exist.
11 used to le said in Kngland that
tho prodigal sums paid to royalty
and (he peerage, came back to the
people In (he majesty and state (hoy
maintained. Hut oxpoiienee tils-
proved this argument. Misers, like
tho pici-i'iit queen, salt down (heir
revenues (111 they have millions
hoarded away; and tho scions of
nobility dissipate (heir substance at
foreign gaining tables. Human
selllHhuesH and perversity aro (o be
counted as factors, and in laying
your social plans it is not safe to
calculate that the rules of equation
will always prevail. "Prosperous
manufacturers" do not always
Imply a well paid proletariat, and
thus (he llscal policy that enhances

Again Turner Grange is called to
mourn. This time, a tondor feud is
borne from our number. On August
2d, a gloom of sadness overspread
the home of John Porter, Master of
Turner Grange, when tho white
winged messenger bore from their
circle the pure spirit of their only
daughter, Nettle O., aged nine years.
Almost from the first she had a
premonition of her death, and oh,
how rijM) forthe Kingdom was our
little "suowdropl"
Little Nettie, though tender in
years, was one among tho Master's
precious Jewels. Her heart was full
of His love and work, and, young as
she was, she was planning to raise
funds for missionary work. This
object (he child was accomplish i tig

strawberry-bed.
The funeral services were wholly
conducted by the Sabbath school, of
wliicn slio was Its "brightest, liest"
member. Tho littlo class (o which
she belonged marched boforo the
little casket, each tiny hand bearing
a lloral od'ering. The pall-bearers
were four of tho Sunday school boys.
We left the bonnie, wee, waxen
casket beneath a mound of locly

One by one our loved ones tire
