Kvery thinking man will agree
with thlH writer in wiylng that tho
BUitwiiian Ih a worxc foo to the re
publican party of Marlon county
than John I Irlnh or any other
democratic champion. With the
election at hand the one object of
jxilltlcal advocacy Ih to gain voten.
The average cltl7un will go to the
IxiIIh from a hsuhc of duty to IiIh
party; but at thl time of party dis
integration there Ih a large contin
gent of waverera who are inlliicnced
by tlioHllglitwtJmniilw.'. They are
uiiHulted in Home way by existing
part lea; they are indiflerent about
voting, aiid'a word will turn them.
It requires extreme delicacy In deal
ing with Mich people, nothing
should be said that will give oH'oiim?,
and a broad catholic Hiilrlt should be
shown that will inspire confidence
and win sympathy.
What can bo said of tho discretion
oftllonmn who assumes par excel
lence to be the champion of republi
canism In thiH county, and who
siM.iiks through a newspaper organ,
that has licon regarded as tho
inouthplccoof tho party for a whole
generation? His bitter and Insult
ing utterances, repeated day after
day, are rankling l the minds of
hundreds, and wo fear will bear
ovll fruit on election day. What is
the republican county committee
doing1 Can It not restrain this In
temperate zealot? Cannot that
Isidy Infuse caution Into his tongue
and jK-n? He has already done
mischief enough todefcat the county
ticket, and certainly he ought not to
Isj allowed to add to his pernicious
work. Wo shall need votes on Mon
day, and most likely want them
very badly, then our republican
solicitors will encounter thepanily;-.
lug ellects of tho Statesman's teach
ings. We suggest, In entire good
faith, that the republican committee
meet to consider this matter, and If
found (.H.'(lleut, that they Issue; a
manifesto disclaiming all the
Illiberal and Injurious sentiments of
the Statesman, mid inviting all re
publicans of whatever shades of le
llef to come to the polls and supjiort
their party. It Is little short of
IK-rtldy foraiiuin, who has nothing
at stake, who wields tho iovorful
agency of a party organ, to ruin the
liniH of a thwuu aspiring candidates
and bring disaster to the cause
merely to gratify his Illiberal spirit,
and to air for a little' while his as
sumed Importanee. Wo again will
tho attention of the republican com
nillteo to this daligoroiH slate of
things.

Wiiilb our home politicians are,
expending idle breath in n tariir di-,
cuwlon, Congressman Hermann isj
at his pot, with his weather eye out I
looking for wjualls. He fell foul of
Itandall In the house yesterday over
the salary of Survoyor-Gonorul Tay
lor, of Oregon. The Pennsylvania
memlier wants homo industry pro
tected, but he has his own way of
doing it. The work of aurvoyirg
the public lands of a large western
state appears trilling to him at along
distance, hence he Is only willing to
allow pauper wages. Our member
was on hand to demand that Justice
Is.- done, which offended Mr. Itan
dall, and ho now wants this very
neccwary olllce vacated. Mr. Her
mann defeated the heavy cut pro
posed, and expects to have the matter
righted In the senate.
