BY TELEGRAPHIC SUMMARY. Gen. Sherlilnu's Illncso. "Washington, May 2o. General Sheridan is not so well this morning. It is stated that tho serious attack of Monday evening was due to heart failure, nnd thero was a slight recur rence of that trouble this morning. Gen. Sheridan is reported to be vary low tills evening. The greatest incitement prevails among tho mem bers of his Household, and they ran bo, seen hurriedly passing hack and forth in tho sick chamber. A consul tation of physicians has been called. Preparing for the Fourth. Several towns throughout tho val ley are preparing to celebrato the Fourth of July already. Gervais and "Woodburn are preparing for rival celebrations, and as botli towns arc working up a boom, they will probably both havo line celebrations. The Second Infantry band lias been engaged at Gervais, and tho pro moters of the new hall hopo to havo It-far enough along by that time to bo ablo to danco in it. Baseball games aro on the programme for both places. Coryallis, however, is making prep arations for tho grandest blow-out of any of them. Invitations have been extended to A, H, C, I and P com panies, 2nd Infantry, and to troop A, Cavalry, O. N. G., to bo present, and participate with E company, 2nd regiment, at that lint ninpn iii n irmiiil liat place In a grand Col. Smith lias been sham battle. invited to command on that day, nnd to bring his stall'. These invita tions have been accepted, and it is likely a great many peoplo from Salem, Eugene, Albany and inter mediate towns will attend. An ex cursion will probably bo run from Eugene and Salem to Albany, and from there via tho O. P. railroad to Corvallis and. return on tho 4th. TELEGRAPHIC SPLINTS. Methodist Sunday-school teacher in Iterca, where Ell Perkins was billed to lecture under tho au spices of Baldwin University, was examining his Sunday-school class. Among others lie asked his class this question : "What did Samuel say to Eli?" No answer was given for a mo ment, then a sweet little girl spoke up and said : "I know." "Well," said tho teacher, "what did Samuel say?" "Ho said, "got thoro.Ell !" was tho prompt reply. Cleveland Leader. That l Night. Peoplo havo found out whoro to go for their baby pictures. The llaitllnrs? of American Half-IlreoR The experience of the teachers of tho Lincoln Institution confirms the views hero expressed, that themtxed Indian Is more exempt from pulmo nary diseaso than tho pure- Indian ; nnd, further, that if the formcrarvat- taeked by diseaso t hey oiler greater constitutional resistnnco to it than tho latter. Tills view is also con firmed by tho large experience of Capt. It. II. Pratt, superintendent of tho Carlisle Indian School, who says in his last report : "Our ex perience is that the mixed bloods re sist disease and death from pulmo nary troubles better than the full bloods, and our best health condi tions aro found among those we send out into families due, T think, very largely to the regular occupa tion nnd varied diet." Similar views have been expressed by others who nave resided among tno mixed or half-breed races in the northwestern part of Canada. Tlieso people aro said to bo strong and hearty, long lived, and not subject to disease, so long as they remain in their native climate. They regard themselves as tho equal or the whites, and look In a patronizing way on tho Indian. Their families aro usually very largo and tho female sex is said to be very handsome. Quito recently 1 had occasion to investigate tho question whether pulmonary con sumption tends to exterminate tho American Indian, and I then found that nearly ull those Indian agencies which show tho lowest consump tion rate aro precisely those which contain tho largest number of mixed bloods. Of course, It Is just possible that tho presence and tho absence of pulmonary consumption in certain i ,H R t.01ln(th,euce. yet j thillk from yfhut hns becn Hll(,i co. eerningtiio improved pnysicai con dition of tho mixed Indian, it is quite evident that tho greater im munity of these tribes from con cen con sumpteon: Is duo to tho fact that they compriso a largo clement which has a superior power of warding oil disease.
