Badcau's claim for M!r'lce rendered the deeeaecd hero In the preparation of hi inemolra. has so far modified his portion aa to oiler a money compensation tosettle the dispute. He agrees to pay his father's life long friend $10,000, not bccHUPO this sum Is justly his due, hut because ho wishes to stop u ouuse of annoyance to his mother. Hadeau refuses to settle on any such terni. He asserts that literary as sistance was rendered Gen. Grant on terms to which the general afllx- ed his signature; this money was fairly earned, and uiiIcm the sum is jwld him as his right, he will not coii'-cnt to receive It us blackmail. The case was to have gone to court on Monday last, but the dispatches from New York make no mention of the suit. The trouble lias grown out of the bumptiousness of Col. Kred. He has put on airs ; treated a trusted secretary of his father with the growtcst disrespect, and now he has to cut his words. Wo can under stand that when the ad'airs of the Grant family came to utter wreck in thai miserable Wall Street busi- not, and the publishers made Grant a tempting oiler if ho would write his memoirs, that he would snatch at this chance of making provis ion for his family. But lie was no writer, his education was dellcient, ami n mortal disease was making ravages on his strength. In such an extremity nothing would be more natural than for him to turn to a friend who had been Intlmatelv in his counsels during the war, who was familiar with the details of his campaigns, and who had an elegant lllorary style. Gen. Grant engaged this man to help him in his literary labor, agreeing to pay him a liberal jiercentngo of the receipts from his book. Now the Illustrious writer is dead, a disnutu lias arisen as to the extent, of the services rendered hy Hadeau In the preparation of the work. It Is admitted that he lived several mouths In thu Grant mansion, la boring dally with the general In his study ; and that thcfo Joint labors were continued until the second volume was half written. Then Gen. Grant's health became so pre carious, and his end apeared so near, that a stenographer was em ployed, and some outside talk caus ed the publishers to Interfuie. Some filendol (Jen. Hadeau havlntr talk ed It around that Hadeau was writ ing the memoirs from note furnish ed by Grant, it was feared that this rumor would spoil the sale of the issik. The general was In extremis and kept alive on drugs, in his en feebled condition of mind and body he made no resistance to signing a mper denying to Ids literary assist ant and former comvunlou In arms any pmt in the Joint wot It. With this paper, Fred Grant spiead him self, and with a deluge of uuneei sary insults, scouted Hadeau as a men' amnuucufls and proof render. Hadeau apalcd to the courts, and there Is such a showing of Justice In his claim, that Col. Fred consents towy his demand, but still denies the JiMhv of the claim. The buinp- tiiiiin young man may have to recede yet another step. Tenant Tamers. Few farmers realize the extent of the renting system prevalont. As might he expected, It prevails to the largest extent In the South, where the average acreage of farms la large and where the social disturbance In cident to the civil war loft land own crs without capital and the laborers unsettled In their relation to the for. mer owners. It was there a necessi ty of the cne that the laborers should work the lands for a sluire of the crop. Hut in the great Wc-t, where it has been always supposed that "Uncle Sam had land enough to give us all a farm," it Is a matter for surprie that there should be a large proportion of the farms In the hands of tenants. Perhaps this is due to the fact that improvident and careless farmers lose their farms and are forced to become tenant", and that many young men without means to purchase land at the pre vailing high value are obliged to work land as tenants. This Is fortu nate In one respect, no doubt, be cause industrious young men have thus an opjwrtunity of making money enough to buy a farm for themselves after a fewyearsof work, and on the whole one who works a farm as a tenant may bo better oil than a farmer whoso land is mort gaged, and who pays in Interest more than many others pay In rent. Hut it is contrary to our American Ideas. New York Times. - -----1 Ji- -!- J"' "TISE3IENTS. mscEUNEors. A POSITIVE FACT.
