MEHAMA NOTES- Death From nn Overdose of Morphine Last evening the wife of J. S. Sor bin died from the supposed elfects of an overdose of morphine. Mrs. Sor biu was an Inveterate user of moi phlne nnd opium ; and notwith standing constant watchfulness by her husband, she managed by "un derground" moans to keep herself supplied with these narcotics. Mr. Sorbin had instituted preliminary action for a divorce, and this fact may, perhaps, have excited her to take an overdose. This case calls for a coroner's inquest if my informa tion is correct in the premises. I notice by a communication ill your journal, that tho little town across tho river from here (under the eye ofN. Milh esq.) has been re christened, and is now called Ly onsville. The original christening committee consider themselves offi cially ignored, slightly Kit down upon in thus substituting so com mon a name for the unique and pleasant sounding Podunk. Pod- uuk Is waiting for the iron horse of the W. V. & C. R. R. Co. to run in before commencing any "Green Bay Tree" extravagance. S. M. TAKIMi SNAP JCDG3IEVT. Ed. Capital Jeurnal: In the Sllverton election on Monday, the prohibitionists made a good display of strength, tying five of tho coun cil, and only lacking two or three votes to elect the wholo ticket. To save tho expense and delay of nnother election those candidates who were tied agreed to pull straws; but it is now reported that tho votes cast for tho prohibitionists aro to be thrown out, because they aro print ed on the wrong kind of paper. I don't know who has ordered this summary way of settling a con test, or whether the candidates and those who supported them with their ballots will submit to such suppression. It is certainly a daring attempt to disfranchise one-half of a city population because of a trif ling irregularity, and I cannot believe that the voters of Sllverton will submit to it. They did not print the ballots and voted them in good faith, and to nullify their votes because of tho carelessness of some committeeman is too high handed a proceeding for freemen to submit to. This may be tho Louis iana method, but it will not suit the latitude of Oregon. A Lovnit of Fair Play. Sai.km, May 10th. TELEGRAPHIC SPLINTS. t Ditnicl K.
