o'clock, Dr. Barker, who l'liul just
left Conkling was seen. His'coun
(enanco at once betrayed he Svprst.
Ho said Conkling was fast failing,
and his lungs were fast tilling with
blood. His breathing was becoming
shorter and shorter, and he added
that there was general wasting
away of the vital powers. Dr. Bar
ker, when pressed for an expression
of opinion as to how long he thought
Conkling would live, declined to
make any positive statement in that
direction.
Dr. Anderson says Conkling will
probably die in two hours.
New York, April IS. Conkling
died at 1 0 a. in. At the bedside of
the dying man were Mrs. Conkling,
Judge Coxe, Dr. Anderson and Mrs.
Oakinan. Mr. Conkling passed
away without moving a limb. Ho
looked as though peacefully sleep
ing. Thero were n number of per
sons outside on the street, waiting
to catch the last report. Within
doors there were between forty and
fifty persons also waiting to hear
the worst. They wero composed
ehlelly of representatives or the
press aud friends of the dead sena
tor. Mr. Conkling died in the rear
chamber, on the second floor of the
residence. "It was a dreadful strug
gle that the patient fought against
death," said Judge Coxe, "but the
end was peaceful and unaccom
panied by pain. The interment
will be at Utica."

builders, have nearly completed a
dynamite cruiser gunboat called the
Yorktown, designed for the United
States navy. It will bo launched on
Saturday, April 28, In the pie&enco
of Secretary Whitney. It carries
four pneumatic guns for the hurling
of dynamite projectiles, each with a
range of at least a mile. Tho guns
are of 15-inch calibre, and the shells,
which can bo 11 red with great
accuracy twice a minute, will con
tain 000 pounds of explosive gela
tine. It Is claimed that tho gun,
properly handled, will be the most
destructive agent of war yet invented.

Conditions aro favorablo for a
general lockout of brewers. Moerlin
having refused to reinbtate a man at
the request of his fellow-workmen
they struck, and their action was
ratitled last night by tho brewers'
union, which declared au immedi
ate) boycott on Moerlin's Iwer. The
boH brewers, in anticipation of this,
decided to stand in case anyone was
boycotted. In obedience to a reso
lution, one of Moerlin's customers,
who this morning stopped taking
Moerlin's beer und tried to buy
elsewhere, was refused. Both sides
are committed to the contest.

Arnold, tho noted poet, scholar,
critic and theologian, whose recent
article on "Civilization in the United
States" attracted marked attention.

spirits. Soon after leaving
houso he fell forward and never
afterward spoke. His daughter ar

sary. Immediately after Mr. Arnold fell
ho was carried into the house of a
doctor near by. He was breathing,
but unconscious. Tho physician
poured spirits down his throat, but
ho never rallied, and died within
four minutes after being taken in
doors. Tho doctors have given a
certificate that Mr. Arnold's death
was due to heart disease.
A Murderer's UneuHy Conscience.
Louisvillk, April 17. Augusto
Anderson committed suicide in a
hotel at Shelbyvllle, Ky.,yesterday,
after confessing to a triple murder.
He was a Norwegian stonecutter,
and had only been in Shelbyvllle
ten days, being engaged in dressing
stone for tho foundation ofa church.
A few minutes before committing
the deed he was in tho hotel otlice
talking with several parties. It was
observed that bomethinir unusual
had disturbed him. He could speak
English very imperfectly, but
enough was learned from his re
marks that ho was conscience-strick
en over a great crime ho had com
mitted, ho claiming to have murder
ed his wife and two children in Nor
way eight years ago. Since that
timo ho said he had not a moment's
peace. Ho then went up stairs to
his room, sat down on tho side of
his bed, placed tho muzzle of a re
volver to his head, pulled tho trig
ger and fell back on tho bed a
corpse.

Johnnie Taylor was killed in a
saloon row at Winslow several
months ago and Victoria was in love
with him.
