morning is, very critical, and fears of
a fatal termination are entertained.
The work on the Ilwaco & Shoal
water Hay railroad includes .1000 feet
trestle and roadway at Ilwaco, 1000
feet along the line, and the removal
of 05,000 cubic yards of earth.
The new school house at Hoseburg
has been completed at a cost of about
$20,000. It is n two-story building,
capable of senting GOO pupils, and
contains side rooms for school
purposes, two recitation rooms, and
one large room for special purposes.
The building is In the form of a
cross, and has a lloor area of school
rooms of 7,844 square feet.
A few days ago, says the Wasco
Sun, K. Vv. Hunker, a workman at
the company's shops, had tho mis
fortune to lose the tlrst linger of his
left hand, lie was engaged as a
helper in the blacksmith shops. In
some manner the sledge was drop
ped on the anvil aud bounced up
again, catching the linger and com
pletely tearing it tilt". A surgeon
amputated the linger above the llrst
joint.
Considerable excitement was wit
nessed at tho depot at Dallas on
Thursday, occasioned by tho south
bound train running away. The
hands were taking their dinner,
when without any apparent cause
the train started down the track at
a considerable speed. The alarm
was given by those standing by and
soon the No. 7 (north bound) was
dispatched after the runaway train
and a lively race for three miles en
sued, and brought back safely to the
station. No serious damage was
done.
Monday afternoon ti couple of
tramps broke into the ivsldcncc of
Mr. Maxwell, who lesldes near
Irving, Lane county, and took
about $10 worth of clothing, etc. It
seems Maxwell and his wife were
out ofthe'houso at the time, but
near by, and Mrs. Maxwell found
them in there aud gave the alarm.
Mr. Maxwell took after them and
succeeded in capturing one of them
at the time aud lie was lodged in
jail. The other was captured at
J larrisburg Wednesday ami SheritT
Sloan went after him Thursday
morning.

evening Leo Hoyt, a small boy,

severe rain and wind storm swept
over Union and Livingston counties,

One death is reported, that of an
unknown man, who was killed by a
falling tree near Caseyvllle.

Even tho visitor had evidently
been instructed not to give any in
formation about the aflhir, and when
questioned denied that the funeral
