Crowd of Italian Strikers Intimi
dated by a Bold Stand.
Younostown (Ohio), April 3.
Nearly GOO employes at the Curbon
quarries of the Limestone Co., of
which John A. Logan, Jr., is gener
al manager and part owner, went on
a strike yesterday because of a reduc
tion in wages. At one of the quarries
about 50 men went to work. The
strikers attempted to drive them
out, but the sheriH'of the county and
his son, who had been telegraphed
for, had arrived on the scene, and
they together with young Logan
planted themselves in the path of
the strikers. The mob were told
to disperse and they stopped in
stantly and then rushed
for the wood. Logan and the
two olllcers remained in their
position and opened fire point blank.
An Italian named Nozero tumbled
over on the ground with a bullet in
his knee. This stampeded the mob,
which became thoroughly frighten
ed, and fled. Ten of the leaders
were captured and locked up. All
1b quiet in the quarries to-day,

last night, his cough being worse
than usual.
Smallpox is raging terribly in the
small town of Bao-oachi, Sonora, and
a complete quarantine is established.
A city ticket composed of women
for mayor and council was elected
in Oskaloosa, Kan., yesterday by GO
majority.
In Los Angeles the jury was com
pleted this morning, in tho case of
Hattio Wolstcin, charged with the
murder of Dr. Harlin, the dentist,
and the trial commenced.
The report of tho local signal otllco
gives the rainfall for the last month
as slightly in excess of the average
rainfall for March in California and
Washington territory, but less than
average in Oregon.
Jack Massey, conductor on the
southbound Los Angeles express,
was shot In the groin by a pesscnger
near Conden last evening. Tho
wound is not necessarily fatal. The
man doing tho shooting was arrest
ed. .Representative ThomaSjOf Illinois,
is dying by inches at his residence
in Washington of cancer of the
throat. There is no hope of his re
covery, and his doctors say it is only
a question of time when tho end
will come.
In u runaway accident in San
Diego yesterday afternoon, Mrs.
Littlcfield, wife of Dr. Ilvah Littio
fleld of Boston, sustained h fracture
of the skull, and recovery is doubtful,
Mrs. F. W. Bradley was knocked
down by the horse and seriously in

PRISON CHAPLAINS.
En. Capital Jeurnal: In your
mention of my name in yester
day's iS'Hie of your paper, yoti say I
served as chaplain of Michigan state
prison four years. You should have
said six years, as I was chaplain
there from September, lSoo, to
September, 1&"S, when I resigned
and took my place in tho regular
pastorate, and in October, 1809, I
was reappointed and served until
October, 1S72, when I resigned and
went into tho regular pastorate
again; in which work I have con
tinued until last September, when I
asked for a superannuated relation,
that I might spend a year with my
friends in Oregon and Washington
Territory. The superintendent of
your prison invited me to preach to
the convicts last Sabbath and I
accepted the invitation, and enjoyed
the service very much, and hope
some good may result from the
ellbrt. I am surprised to learn that
your state makes no provision for
the appointment and support of a
chaplain tothisprison. In Michigan
we should as soon undertake to run
a prison without a warden, as with
out a chaplain. With us tho
chaplains duties and responsibilities
are clearly defined by the statute,
and he is recognized as an olllcer of
tho prison, us really as any other
oilleiul. My successor at our prison,
a Baptist minister, appointed on my
recommendation, is now in his
10th year's servicev giving such
entire satisfaction that no change of
administration has jostled him, and
they have grown to feel that they
cannot afl'ord to spare him. Your
prison needs that kind of man as
chaplain and you would soon come
to feel that such an olllco pays.
Then us your asylum is situated, the
same man could serve thoso un
fortunate creatures also; acting us
chaplain of both institutions, which
would furnish him with plenty of
work, and I do hope at your next
legislative session sonio man of in
fluence will take hold of this matter,
and secure an amendment to your
statute, that will make provision
for such an ofllcc, and that soma
man of tho right stamp may be
found in some of theso christian
bodies to All that olllce nobly.
Mr. Editor, I desire to express
my hearty endorsement of your
criticism on Mr. Mills' representa
tion of Kansas prohibition. That
gentleman knows, if ho is capable of
representing matters pertaining to
prohibition in Kansas, that ho
grossly misrepresents tho matter
and does it for tho purposo of in
juring tho republican party, which
Is unjust and nicked in the extreme,
The fact are, as demonstrated by
Hgures, "which do not Ho;" the
prohibitory liquor law Is as rigidly
enforced in Kansas, as any prohibi
tory law upon tho statute, and Mr.
Mills must know it, and if ho docs
not he ought to hold Ids peace.

into eilect in the yards here prompt
ly at noon. A Fort Scott switch
engine hud just backed up to some

standing.
Kansas City, April 2. At 5
o'clock this afternoon switchmen

to work on condition that they are
