Washington, March i!2. The
iiHuoiiiil capitol was ntruck by light
ning yesterday afternoon suddenly.
First there was a blinding Hash,
followed iiihtantly by a report like
the explosion of a bombshell over
the building. Such was the territle
force of the stroke that it shook the
vast marble structure and rattled
the windows in all parts of the
building. The lightning ran in
streaks along the telegraph and elec
tric light wires and steam heating
pipes, causing a complete panic
among the employes in the building.
The report was so deafening as to
cause a temporary cessation of busi
ness in both houses of congress.

jumped to their feet in terror, and
fomo little time elapsed before order.

Train Jumped the Track.
Han Diloo (Cal.), March .'. A
large freight locomotive jumped the
track near Carlsbad on Tuesday and
blockaded the road for some dis
tance. The train from the east was
delayed twenty-two hours. A large
force of men worked all night to
build it track around the wreck, and
it was not until noon yesterday
that trains were able to pass.

Adams, of the Union Pacific, Is in
the city. He says he has no reason
to fear a strike on his road, because
there are no dlllerences between the

sistant Secretary Maynard has in
formed the Collector of Customs at
San Diego, Cal., that coal imported
from Northwestern Canada for use
by Spreekels' Sugar Refining Co.,
of San Francisco, being anthracite
coal, is exempt from duty under the
provisions of the free list.

house committee on territories to-day
decided to report tho bill for tho or
ganization of the territory of Alaska.
CALL FOR REPUBLICAN CONVENTION.
A republican convention for tho
state of Oregon is called to meet at
the city of Portland, Oregon, on
Wednesday, the 11th day of April,
A. D. 1888, at 11 o'clock a. m.,
for the purpose of nominating can
didates for tho following oftleers,
to-wit. Representative- in congress,
three presidential electors, supreme
judge and district olllcers, and to
select six delegates to attend tho
national republican convention,
and to transact such other business
as may properly come before the
convention. The convention will
consist of 209 delegates, nppc tion-

spires that a general tie-up of North
western roads has only been pre
vented by Chief Arthur's counsels.
The men have been on tho point of
striking for some time, but were un
willing to take the responsibility of
doing so without the approval of the
grand olllcers and the support of the
whole brotherhood.
Committees of engineers and fire
men went to Chicago yesterday to
consult Arthur. On the result of
their visit depends whether a gener
al tie-up will be begun or not.

Hixkna, (Ark)., March fil. Last
night about two o'clock there was
an attempt made to burglarize tho
safe in the Union depot of the Irons
Mountain road and the St. Louis &
Texas railroad, and to assassinate
the operator, named Bowles, at Net
tleton, billowing to the bravery and
the presence of mind of Howies, tho
attempt proved aboi live. Tho oper
ator heard coniiderablo noise on tho
platform and awaited developments.
Presently there was a knock at tho
door, with a icqiicsttoopcn it ; that
some pai ties deshed to send a tele
gram. Tho operator became sus
picious, placed a revolver in hideout
pocket, and opened the door. Wlicn
he got the door open he saw two
men heavily masked. They said
nothing, seemed to be surprised at
Ills appearance. Howies, surmizing
their design, pulled his pistol and
tired, but owing to ills excitement,
he missed his aim.
The would-be robbers returned the
lire, but, owing to tho alertness of
liowles in getting into the depot, ho
was not hurt. One of the bullets,
however, went through his sleeve.
A posse was soon afterward organ
ized to capture the would-be assassins
and burglars, but up to tho piesent
they have not been captured or
heard of.

senate judiciary committee and the
committee appointed yesterday by
the house in their joint teport to tho
legislatuie concerning the proper
measures to be taken in the Tate
defalcation case recommend his Im
peachment. The report says that
(he suspension by tho governor does
not vacate the otllce, and that im
peachment Is tho only constitutional
means by which an absconding
treasurer may be removed and his
place made vacant.
