ator Mitchell, of Oregon, providing
for the appointment of a commis
sion, to be composed of three com
petent naval officer--, whose duty it
should be to make a direful examin
ation of the North Pacific coast and
select a site for a naval station,
Admiral Porter, first admiral of the
navy, has written a lctterto Senator
Mitchell endorsing the proposition
to establish strong and complete
navy- yard and station at Port
Tbwnsend, on Puget Sound.
The secretary of tho navy, while
approving of the manner in which
the work is to be done, gives little
encouragement to the scheme.

state of Oregon is willed to meet at
the city of Portland, Oregon, on
Wednesday, the 11th day of April,
A. D. 188S, at 11 o'clock a. m.,
for the purpose of nominating can
didates for the following ofllccrs,
to-wit. Representative in congress,
three presidential electors, supremo
judge and district ollleers, and to
select six delegates to attend the
national republican convention,
and to transact such other business
as may properly come before tho
convention. The convention will
consist of 209 delegates, apportion

tho political situation, he says that

republican convention, the Pacific
Coast states will vote for General
Miles, and If the republicans nomi
nate a pro-Chinese candldato he can
not carry the Pacific Coast and
(jlope. Rlalne, ho says, leads all
competitors for popular favor on tho
republican side. Delegates to tho
national republican convention from
Oregon will go to Chicago uiiln
structed. Oregon raised 15,000,000
pounds of wool last year, and Cleve
land's policy would paralyze this
industry. Oregon is opposed to
Cleveland also because tjf his position
toward the river and harbor appro
priation bill.

whose name could not be ascertain
ed, had Ids left hand terribly muti
lated in J. C. Trulllnger's mill this
afternoon. Dr. .1. A. Fulton dressed
the wounded member.

American Sugar Refinery Company
lias chartered the ship Arabia at tho
reported rate of $l,fi() per short ton
to load a cargo of raw sugar for Now
York. Sho will load at once, and
as she is quite large, the vessel regis
tering 2024 tons, sho will be able to
take away about !!000 tons of the ex
pected surplus of 00,000 tons.

Swalm, charged with appropriating

Donald in Los Angeles and in this
