select a site for a naval station,
Admiral Porter, first admiral of the
navy, has written a lctterto Senator
Mitchell endorsing the proposition
to establish strong and complete
navy- yard and station at Port
Tbwnsend, on Puget Sound.
The secretary of tho navy, while
approving of the manner in which
the work is to be done, gives little
encouragement to the scheme.

state of Oregon is willed to meet at
the city of Portland, Oregon, on
Wednesday, the 11th day of April,
A. D. 188S, at 11 o'clock a. m.,
for the purpose of nominating can
didates for the following ofllccrs,
to-wit. Representative in congress,
three presidential electors, supremo
judge and district ollleers, and to
select six delegates to attend the
national republican convention,
and to transact such other business
as may properly come before tho
convention. The convention will
consist of 209 delegates, apportion

to load a cargo of raw sugar for Now

as she is quite large, the vessel regis

pected surplus of 00,000 tons.
