On the morning of thebattle iniiiiy Congressman in their car riages followed the army to witness the Imttie. Not w I-ogan. On foot, with ii musket In his hands, on that fatal morning he olned the ranks of the Slid Michigan Infantry and through that long and terrible day stood with the soldiers of that regi ment, which had the honor, with the Ilril Michigan, of covering the retreat of the army from that dis astrous Held. A few days after the battle, (Jovernor Yates arrived in Washington. He met Logan, who, in the very tlrst words he uddreased to him, asked for a commission to raise a regiment of volunteers from his own district. The request was Instantly granted. Kcslguing ills seat in Congress lie hurried home. He then lived In Marion, a small town In Southern Illinois and dis tant some twenty-live miles from the nearest railway station. His; wife procured a horse and buggy and drove to the station to meet him. He did not come and she returned to Marion. The town was full of rebel sympathl.ers and coh iierlieads, of whom the editor of the Vidette Is a degenerated specimen. They had read Logan's recent sKveli in Congress and had heard of his conduct ut Hull Hun, and now they oM'iily threutened her life and that of her husband should he dare say a word for the Pnion cause on his arrival. With great anxiety the noble woman turned around and retraced her steps to the station. Late that night Logan came. Leav ing their tired horse they procured another and set out for Marlon, when1 they arrived a little after sunrise. The mob was still there and im mediately surrounded their carriage. Hut Logan did not falter. Standing up hi the buggy with matchless elo quence he pleaded the ciui.se of the I'uloii, and called upon loyal men to come forward and enlist In Its' de fense. And there, without leaving the carriage imd his wife by hissldo, he U'gan the enrollment of that splendid regiment (lie :I1M.
