state of Oregon is called to meet at
the city of Portland, Oregon, on
Wednesday, the 11th day of Aprl',
A. D. 1888, at 11 o'clock a. m.,
for the purpose of nominating can

judge and district officers, and to

It is understood that tho new Chi
nese treaty intends to prohibit abso
lutely the coming to tills country of
any Chinese laborres In tho future,
but a representative of tho Chinese
empire in Washington has brought
to the attention of Secretary Bayard
the fact that there are Chinese in
this country who have accumulated
sums of money and have made in
vestments in real estate in Califor
nia and elsowhere.
Chang Yen Hoon, tho Chinese
minister, says his government is not
only willing but anxious to prevent
the coming of Chinese to this coun
try. Ho artfully declares, however,
that it would be unlust to denrive
any Chinaman in the United State
owning property hero who, under
the present law is entitled to remain
as long as ho chooses, of tho right to
go to China and return at his pleas
ure, under proper limitations.
It is understood that tho treaty
will givo Chinese owning real or
personal property of tin? value or
$1,000 or upward certain privilege
ill, respect to travel that are not en
Joyed by their more impecunious
Mongolian brethren. Tho coming
of Chinese laborers in tho future will
bo prohibited unless the Six Compa
nies can iind a $1,000 plant for eveiy
