The Jealous Paramour.

Helen Howard was shot and instant
ly killed last night by Frank Ryan.
Ryan had been boarding with Mr.
and -Mri$ Howard and had been
criminally intimate with the latter.
He wasjarrested late last night.
He claims the shooting was acciden-
tal.

San Francisco, March 3. The
Examiner this morning has six
columns of details of the examina
tion by the special commission into
the charges against custom officers,
charged with being connected with
the opium ring at Portland, Tacoma,
Seattle, Victoria. The Examiner
states that the headquarters of the
riug are at Victoria and all its agents
hold government positions. There
are several at Seattle and Port Town
send. Collector Abrham, of Portland,
credited with stating to commis
sioners that was satisfied that both
Tacpma and Seattle were used by
smugglers in getting goods into this
country duty free as they offer un
rivalled facilities for the entrance of
schooners and small craft. Grave
suspicions are attached to a banker
at Port Townsend who is said to
bo engaged In smuggling pn a largo
scale and only uses his bank as a
blind.

A Wild Train.
Tuscon, Arizona, March 3.
James Redmond, an engineer, was
thrown from tho top of a wild
freight train going down Dragoon
grade yesterday. The train broke
In two and the ulr brakes refused to
work, Retfrnqiid was setting on the
brakes, when ho fell. The train was
saved but lie will probably die.

Atlanta, Go., March 2. Joo
White was to-day taken to tho peni
tentiary to servo a life sentence for
the murder of Charlie Phillips, of
Campbell county, on the 2d of July
last. There was a woman in tho
case. Joo White loved Lucy
Chandler, who was also a favorite
with Charlie Phillips. As the Fourth
of July festivities were approaching
in Palmetto, tho two suitors re
paired to Lucy's house on the even
ing of tho 2d, when they were
chagrined each at meeting tho
other, and as White was obstinate
and unwilling to yield, hard words
grew out of hard feelings and hard
blows followed, ending in Joo talcing
down a gun and shooting Phillips
so that he died. The woman, Lucy
Chandler, over whom tho murder
took place, removed immediately
after the murder, and although one
of tho ardent lovers was in a felon's
cell and the other in his grave, Lucy
did not mourn long, but set her cap
for new catches, and in November
last was married. '
Joo White, as ho was behind tho
bars in his cell this morning, learned
for the first time of the marriage of
tho woman for whom ho had won a
hard destiny even before his fato was
decided.
Killed Over a Game of Cards.
Socoimo, N. M., March 2. Intel
ligence of a stabbing affray which
occurred at White Oaks, Lincoln
county, a few days ago, in which a
man by the name of Foloy lost his
life, was to-day brought to this city.
The particulars were as follews:
Foley, who was a stranger in the
town, had stopped at the cabin of
Jim Curry to spend the night. After
supper tho two men sat down to a
game of cards, during which an
"altercation arose, and Curry, grasp
ing a large knife that laid upon tho
table completely disemboweled hi3
adversary. He Is under arrest. This
is tho Bame Curry who, several years
ago, gained so much notoriety in
Texas and barely escaped being
lynched at the hands of a mob for
tho brutal murder of an actor earned
Porter.

man Mills is much pleased with the
results of the work of the dernocratie
members of his committee. He
says tho bill is so conservative and
fair that it will commend itself to a
majority of the house. Ho admits
that fourteen democrats of tho
Randall school will probably voto
against tho measure, two from Penn
sylvania, two from New Jersey, four
from Ohio, four from Louisiana, and
two from California. He expects,
however, that their votes will be
offset by those of eight or ten repub
licans, mostly from tho Northwest.
The aggregate reduction proposed
by tho bill is about $50,000,000, It
is intended, however to re-enact, the
old package, clause, providing for
a duty on packages which does not
a lay special tax on packages of differ
ent ki nds, but merely provides for the
finding of the value of tho good and
that the duty be assessed on them
accordingly. This' will add from
flvo to ten mllUlon dollars to tho re
venue, so that the net reduction
will not exceed forty-five million
dollars.
It is tho opinion of a majority of
the committee that tho revenue of
tho government should bo reduced
at least $70,000,000. Twenty-five
dollars, therefore, arc left to bo dis
posed of by changes in internal re
venue taxation.

Birmingham, Ala., March 2.
Joo Hanby, colored, was shot and
killed about 3 o'clock this morning,
by Anthony Bingham, also colored.
Bingham was in tho room with
Hanby's wife when tho latter went
homo, and the door was locked on
the inside. Hanby's wife refused to
let him in, and ho tried to break
through n window, but was shot
dead by Bingham. Tho murdorer
escaped, but Hanby's wife was ar
rested andjalled.

Mitchell, pugilist, was summoned
before tho local magistrate at Cheley
to-day to answer to tho charge of ar
ranging for a prize fight with John
L. Sullivan. Mitchell was accom
panied by Rowell and Kllraln, and
disavoAved his intention to break tho
peace of England. Ho was bound
over in two thousand pounds.
