confessed to having killed tho girl,
but denied performing a criminal
assault.
He says h,e ordered the girl to go
to work and she replied im
pertinently. This angcrcu him and
he threw a hatchet at Tier. She was
badly cut, but picked up a pail and
hit him. Then, he says, he lost his
mind and, forcing her into a closet,
brained her. Davis narrowly escaped
lynching in the country.
