"that ' Mr, Smith decided to Inform the officers of the condition ot affairs, and Mr, Smith's daughters coming to the city, he sent word by them to Sheriff By B. Colbath. of the report received by him. The -Misses . Smith, on reaching-Sa lem at 8 o'clock last' night, at once went to the sheriff's office, wherer they "in formed Deputy Sheriff John O. Estes, end-4hat officer and Nlghtwatch Louis Felsom at once went into the Jail and made an investigation. The cell doors were thoroughly examined. , as were .the window gratings and all Iron work in the whole : Jail, but no sawed bars -were found. A critical examination of the pail disc lose J nothing suspicious and the only result of the Investigation was the growling of the three prisoners confined in the cells, at being disturbed in their slumbers. ! , - At the conclusion of the investigation the officers; decided that -the story told by! the ; Ramsbys might be a fake, bat this did not lend-to decrease their vig ilance, and a close watch was last night kept on the three. prisoners, and this cottditlch will continue. . The plan to lay a three-rail track, as was previously stated, has been aban doned on account of the large cars re quiring heavy rails, and if two heavy rail and one small one were laid the smalt cars would have to run upon one high rail and one low one. so Manager Brown has decided to lay the heavy rails outside of the narrow track, and make a double track of it. , The work of laying the track down State street? will begin on Monday morning, when the old broad g-mge track will be torn up along the curb line and laid In the middle of the street, and during this operation,; two sets of cars will be ;run upon the State; street line. Mr Brown thinks that the track will be completed tSCom menial street next Week. . s ; . , .-. ; - i : -. A switch' will be put in at about the same place as the old one, on . the broad guage line to provide for the passing of cars at that point, while a short ssur will be constructed on the narrow guage line for the accommoda tion of the small cars, Manager Brown says that his appro priation for track 1 building will be about exhausted when this Improve ment is completed and Mr. Brown will. for the present, have to turn hla atten tion to other improvements of the com pany's property which are quite as necessary but less expensive. , -, , THE STEUSL0FF BUILDING WORK ON THE FINE NEW STRUC TURE HAS BEEN COMMENCED , BY THE CONTRACTOR. .
