BIG FREIGHT BUSINESS
IN THIS CIT
- - r -.'.-it
Shipments ef February Exceed, the .
Same Month; for Last Year By
Many Tens Rati and River Bus!
' ness. ' . .-.-.j j -
There Is a surprising Increase In the
volume of freight traffic In this city
for the month of February, over that
of tho corresponding month last year.
A glance over. Mr. Merriman's state
ments, at the Southern Pacific freight
depot, for the past two months show
an increase " of 1,100,000 pounds of
freight, handled for February, 1902,
over that handled February, 1901, or
800,000 pounds more ,fcrwurdecl and
300,000 more, received, and It must be
taken into conslderatiorf that the year
1901 was an exceptionally good one for
bualncas.throuxhout.
Tho statements show that there has
born shotted 13.000 bales of the 1901
crop of -fiops, and there III remain
2899 bales stored In the company's
warehouacs, the whole amount being
nearly -double that for the year 1900.
There were all told 114 carloads of
prunes shipped from Halem, of the 1901
crop, and. about twenty-four carloads
of nursery stock, since" January 1st.
The latter Item ahows the Immense
volume of business carried on by the
local nursery companies.:' Of canned
goods there were thirty-nine carioada.
or 1.407.000 pounds shipped; and ovrr
100 carloads of - brick and thlrty-flve
carloads of live stock, principally sheep
and swine, besides a number' of car
loads of atovea...
During the month of January, 1902,
there were received at the Salem sta
tion 2,500.000 . pounds of freight and
over 2,200.000 pounds forwarded. This
materfcal Increase in traffic has neces
sitated the increase iq the force hand
ling the freight to double what it was
ast year and as the business Is still
on the Increase Mr. Merrlman is
obliged to employ more help .to meet
the demand. , ' - .
During he month of February,' l9o;.
tho O. It. N. Pn. ttnA th ft P1 TN
Co. combined handled 1.608.146
pounds of freight, of which 600,000
pounds represents their combined re
ceipts, and 1,008,14V pounds w ere for
warded. During February, 1901. the
i B. c N. Co. alone received .536.474
pounda of m-rcbandise .and - shipped
730,020 pound?.
