Pome of us who are now enjoy ing th privileges, of the Rural Mall, "withoat money and without price,' formerly paid $2 per year for a small box at the postofllce nnd then had to go tvo or. three limps to got onr mall, and we did no,t complain at this, ,frt lem enjoys the distinction of having more Mall Ttoutes leading1 out from It than any other town on the Pacific ?oast, -which certainly speaks well for the Intelligence 'and enterprise of thf people of Salem and vicinity. ' j There was some objection at first to he Kural Mail on the part of business men. at the towns where It was estab lished, on the plea that It would be an injury to business, as people would not come to town to trade as often a "they formerly did; but this prejudice; as passed away, as it has been fully de monstrated that people trade about the same, anyway, whether they come Pl dorh or often. - ; It la a fact that farms along the lines of-the Rural Mail have been enhanced considerably , In value by the establish ment of that service. I dare say there is not an individual today who is. en joying the privileges of the Iiural Mail who would have It withdrawn for any reasonable sum of money. , j . W should treat th carriers T:ind!y and not be too wilting4 to find fault.wltb them for any little omission or error, but show them that we appreciate thefr effort to renler good service Should some of us fruit growers.- who resld along their lines, occasionally drop a big "red apple" Into our mall boxesf for them, no doubt , they would thoroughly appreciate the kindness. We are gladto know that the .salaries of jthe carriers will soon be, increased to something near the compensation that they should receive for the hard ships and exposures that they have to undergo, especially during the winter reason. It the great Republican patty had not done thousands of .deeds to Immor talize itself, tois one act of inaugur ating the Rural Mail should immortal ize If Rrepeetfully P. XV. MATT.HPTWS.. Fal m.
