"Dr, T. L. Ball, who has returned
from a trip up the North Santiam. told
of a smooth swindling game that was
worked at Mlnto by an old man who
gave bis name as John Bailey. Bailey
.went to Mlnto about ten days ago and
represented that he was on his way to

Company's mines at Quartsville. ' with
a view of purchasing the same. He
said the snow was too deep and he
would spend a few days 'fishing at

about all kinds of mines, saying he

It was a strip of low, flat, brushy
country, bcunded cn the west by Atlin
lake and on all other sides by moun
tains and by benches that ran back ta
the mour.tuins. It waa perhaps fou" or
five mllea long and three wide. We
went down the mountain aide until we
struck the brush where a litil creek
entered It and, worked Its way through
the brush and mesa to the lake be
yond. Here we separated, Motse tak
ing the left hand side of the creek
and I the right. I worked my way
through the biurh, over logs and bog
holes. The ground underneath was a
solid muss of moss soaking with wa
