Coach Sharmon Sadamori commented "Michelle scored higher on the beam this weekend than ever before She did a fine job." ___ ! The U.S. Energy Research and Development Admin istration (ERDA) has award ed Oregon State University an additional $158.000 to study combustion of wood and way* to increase ef ficiency and energy output while decreasing air pollution problems. A $100.000 grant in 1976 enabled David C. Junge, me chanical engineering re search associate and project leader, to build a special pilot test facility, it has a "spreader stoker” combust ion chamber similar to those used by industry for burning wood residue fuels to gene rate steam. “Wood has been a fuel since the early history of man but research is lacking on rates of combustion of dif ferent wood species under varied firing conditions." the engineer noted. Concern over air pollution and fuel shortages have added new importance to investigations with wood, Junge added. The project was prompted by the fact that the Pacific Northwest alone has approx imately 1.000 industrial wood fired boilers in operation now. "Roughly half of these boilers have substantial dif ficulty in meeting environ mental emission regulations VSITH I HL. BASKETBALL SEASON starting December 2 against Vallivue. Nvssa’s Ed Tensen (12) and Eric Stunz (25) along with the whole team are putting in a little bit of practice before the season starts. because of smoke and pan iculate emissions,” Junge said. "Furthermore, they’re not very efficient from the standpoint of steam product ion per unit of wood fuel." Combustion chambers and boilers are getting better "but vital design information has not been available,” Junge continued. The new OSU work "should provide the required data and open the way for continued and greater use of this renewable resource," the eneineer emphasized. “The studies." Junge pointed out.“will answer such questions as: What is the value of preheated air in the combustion chamber as an aid to burning? What size and how dry wood ought to be to achieve complete combustion? And what are the best air-to-fuel mixtures to completely burn the wood and limit emissions to the atmosphere?” Tests so far in the new OSU project have been limited to Douglasfir. But the new grant will permit expan- sion ot studies to include hemlock, alder, pine, cedar and various hardwoods grown throughout the U.S. “We expect to bring in fuel samples from Vermont. New Hampshire. North Carolina, Arkansas and Oklahoma," Junge said. Looking ahead, Junge in tends to evaluate wood combustion in “fluidized bed" combustion chambers where fuel particles are burned in suspension with other solid materials rather than resting on a grate. “Fluidized bed wood com bustion is currently being used on a limited scale in the Northwest but some basic engineering information is lacking." he said. “There’s been tremendous interest to date from the wood industry people who are faced with operation of wood burning boilers," Junge reported. "They’re providing considerable help in terms of equipment ana technical expertise and are following our results care fully." A small computer the size of a desk is not only easy to operate, but can provide small businessmen with many of the same benefits big companies get from their big computers. Called the IBM System/32, it can improve inventory control and generate key reports that can make a major contribu tion to the management of a business. Yet it fits in almost anywhere. There was no exten sive damage.
