honored at thia year’s AFS
Thailand Festival scheduled
Friday evening, January 27
in the Nyssa school cafe-
torium. Miss Tangtatswasdi
is from Bangkock, Thailand,
and during the school year is
making her home with the
Mel Beck family.

One of the coldest sieges to
hit the Nyssa country for
many years has been causing
fuel men to smile, while the
general public has been
huddled around the red-hot
stove and furnaces. Accord
ing to the official records at
the government office, the
temperature has been above
freezing only twice during
the entire month. On the first
of January, the mercurv
climbed to 33 degrees for a
short time and again on the
4th, it reached 33 degrees,
which is only one degree
above freezing.
The low mark of the season
for Nyssa was reached last
Thursday night when the low
of 21 degrees below zero was
reached.
Installation of officers was
held recently for Job's
Daughters Bethel 433. Choir
members are Marcia Young,
Gayle Ableman, Marille Wil
son, Shariene Kido and Jill
Franklin. Kathy Nelson, mar
shal; Christy Nq|son, junior
princess; Teresa Hamilton,
honored queen; Jane Tim
merman, senior princess;
and JoAnn Timmerman,
guide.
20 YEARS AGO
Clifford Main, Nyssa con
tractor, was unanimously
elected Mayor of the City
Tuesday night following in
stallation of four newly
elected councilmen and or
ganization of the council. He
will serve during the 1957-58
biennium and succeeds Paul
House who was mayor from
January 1955, until Tuesday.
The new mayor has served on
the city council for the past
two years, having been
elected in November of 1954.
Newly elected councilmen
who took office Tuesday
night are Grant Rinehart and
Gus Liming, elected in
November to succeed Hugh
Tobler and Tom Jones, who
were not candidates for
re-election. House and Wal
ker Low were installed as
members of the council, both
having been elected to
succeed themselves last No
vember. Holdover members,
in addition to Main, are Orin
Sumner and Frank Morris,
who complete the seven-man
governing body.

A pre fabricated aeroquad
hanger has been erected at
the Nyssa airport on the
Idaho side of the Snake
River.

through the kindness of the
public-minded citizens who
advance the money for the
hangar and its erection. The
hangar will be paid for
through hangar rentals. The

Mr. and Mrs. Emil Stunz
left for Portland Wednesday
morning on a combined
business and pleasure trip.
They plan to be gone about
ten days.
SUNSET VALLEY
Mrs.
Claude Skinner met her
daughter. Mrs. Shirley Schu
lter. at Boise on January 1,
where they left by plane for
Canon City, Colorado to
attend memorial services for
their mother and grandmo
ther. Mrs. Violet Barragree
of Canon City. Services were
held on January 3 and
interment followed at the Ca
non City Cemetery. They re
turned home on January 5
after experiencing a few
transportation delays.
50 YEARS AGO
Two stills, hundreds of
gallons of mash and about 50
gallons of liquor have been
confiscated and three men
are under arrest following
raids in the vicinity of
Huntington and Brogan with
in a week's time by Sheriff C.
W. Glenn. Deputy Charles
Leavitt and other special
deputies.
The officers located a
50-gallon still only a quarter
of a mile from the highway
this side of Huntington.
Thursday night, equipped
with a complete outfit for
manufacturing liquor, 450
gallons of mash and about 25
gallons of the finished
product. The other still was
found in a dugout above
Brogan.
ARCADIA • Mr. and Mrs.
Carl Baker and daughter of
Salem, visited the McPeak's
over New Years. Carl Is a
brother of Mrs. McPeak.
They returned home on
Tuesday and reported clear
roads after leaving Treasure
Valley.
Karma Kesler came home
for Christmas with her
parents and family. She went
back to Provo, Utah on
Sunday after Christmas.
The Kesler family had a
birthday party for Clarence
Kesler, Sr. during the holi
days. Although snow had
filled their yard, their son-in-
law. Neil Petterson got out
his tractor and blade and
cleaned the yard. There were
20 guests and a potluck
dinner served. His birthday
was January 3. During the
course of the afternoon,
within the space of an hour,
he received long distance
telephone calls from a son,
Carl in Texas, a brother Joe
of Salt Lake city, a sister
Faye Raymond, Alberta,
Canada, and a daughter
Karma, in Provo, Utah and a
brother George in Ogden,
Utah.
Mr. and Mrs. Orville
Carroll and family visited the
Henry Carrolls over Christ
mas and New Years. They re
turned to their home in Bend
after New Years.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Carroll
and family visited the Henry
Carrolls and guests Christ
mas evening. Their friends
will be glad to know that Jim
and Karen have moved into
their new home in Big Bend.
Doyel Carroll stayed over
night Friday evening with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Carroll. Doyel lives in Moun
tain Home, Idaho.
Christmas dinner was held
at the Otis Bullard home with
all their children present,
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Jensen
of Boise and their boys. Mr.
and Mrs. George Boyack and
daughter Nancy, and Mr. and
Mrs. Donald Bullard and
three children.
Mr. and Mrs. Otis Bullard
went to Boise to their
daughter’s home on De
cember 30 and stayed until
January 2. Then they went to

their daughter. Betty’s home
at Meridian and stayed until
January 5, when they re
turned to their home.
On Tuesday, January 4,
Mrs. Otis Bullard and Mrs.
George Boyack went in to
Boise to visit Mrs. Gladys
Bullard.
On Sunday, January 9, Mr.
and Mrs. Otis Bullard visited
the Malheur Memorial Hos
pital. They visited Clyde
Long. Dr. John and Bessie
Long and Ethel Thompson.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald
Bullard and family went to
McCall for New Years for two
days.
Violet Rose Wood and her
children visited her parents
over the Christmas holidays.
They live in Kenniwick,
Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Walker of Provo, Utah and
their family were holiday
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Neil
Petterson.
Connell Petterson went to
Provo. Utah after New Years
to enroll in college at BYU.
Mr. and Mrs. Neil Petter
son spent last weekend in
Boise. They returned home
Sunday.
Clyde and Nell Bowers left
December 20 for Auburn,
Washington,
where they
spent two weeks with their
son and family, Mr. and Mrs.
Bob Bowers. On Sunday,
January 2, they attended a
soccer game. Bradley Bowers
a grandson, is a member of a
soccer team, that won a blue
ribbon in their division. The
game on the 2nd was the first
tournament game of six to be
played fur the championship.
His team won 6-0. So they
will go on until they are
beaten, or win the champion
ship.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde
Bowers left Auburn on
January 3. They stopped at
Moxee City, Washington, to
spend the night visiting old
friends, Mr. and Mrs. Perry
Richmond, who were former
neighbors of the Bowers in
the Valley View district. The
Bosers came home next dav.
On Saturday, January 8,
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bowers
were guests of their son, Don
and family at Parma for a
waffle breakfast and an
all-day visit.

Fred Coopman has bought
a Ford car and is busily
engaged teaching the critter
to go. As he has escaped
without any fatal accident so
far. he feels greatly encour
aged.

livestock, the Nyssa Meat
Market announces a raise in
the price of meat of about two
cents per pound. Somebody
is always taking the joy out of
life.

sed away on December .30.
1977 at the age of 86 years.
She leaves ten surviving
children. 38 grandchildren
and 54 great-grandchildren.
She has visited relatives in
Shis area many times and we
sincerely extend our sym
pathy to Mrs. Rita Skinner
and the family.
Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Ora
Newgen visited at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie
Johnson in Parma. Mrs.
Johnson is recovering satis
factorily after having been ill.
Maitland Smith and friend
of Oneill, Nebraska was a
guest on New Years Day at
the home of his uncle and
aunt. Mr. and Mrs. Ken
Lorensen. He and the Loren
sens visited by phone with
Mrs. Hattie Smith of Johns
town, Nebrasa. Mrs. Smith is
Mail's mother and Mrs.
Lorensen's sister.
Mona and Mila Lorensen,
Mark and Lauri Abbe were
visitors a day during school
vacation at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Ken Lorensen.
Harriet Lorensen returned
to TVCC on Sunday evening
after spending the weekend
at the home of her parents.
