The world'* largest annual
masquerade party will take
place a* Oregon’s 349,000
elementary school children
join more than 30 million
other trick-or-treaters across
the United States this Hal
loween.
As the children assume
their make-believe role* of
witches and goblins, real
dangers of accident and tire
lurk in the night, warns the
Insurance Information Insti
tute.
Halloween is the one time
of the year that so many
children will be roaming their
neighborhood* at dusk and
after dark. Motorist* who
must drive on All Hallow's
Eve are urged to use extra
caution on the road—and
when backing out of drive
ways.
The Institute cautions that
motorists should be espe
cially alert for children
darting out from behind
parked cars.
A* the
nation's little
ghosts and pranksters make
their annual appearance this
Halloween, parent* can play
an instrumental role in
ensuring their safety. The
Institute offers these sugges
tions:
• Escort small children.
Make sure older trick-or-
treaters carry a flashlight.
• Widen the eyehole* of
your children'* masks to
increase visibility. Better
still, use facial makeup
instead of masks.
• Choose Halloween cos
tumes that are made of bright
or light colored fabric that
will be easily visible to
drivers. Put reflective tape on
dark apparel and trick-or-
treat bag*. In addition,
costumes should be made of
fire-resistant materials when
ever possible.
• Keep lighted jack o'lan
tern* and decorative candles
out of the reach of children
and away from flammable
materials such as draperies,
upholstered furniture and
paper decorations. A* always
keep matches and smoking
materials where children
cannot get at them.
• Warn your children not to
cat any of the treats until you
have had a chance to check
them.
In addition to Tire and road

danger* which lurk on
Halloween. Your yard can be
a potential source of danger
for unexpected after-dark
visitors.
To reduce the possibility of
accident*, take time before
dark to clean up any loose
debris, yard chair* and other
objects that might become
unseen obstacles. Remove or
replace loose bricks, stones
or piece* of pavement on
your walk* and driveway. A*
an additional safeguard,

well-lighted as possible.
