Rill Called Threat to Shopper Rights
Balancing Claims
The proposed Balanced Growth and Economic Planning Act
would "totally disenfranchise” the consumer's right to buy what
he wants and would kill the private enterprise system, the president
of The Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. warned recently.
Richard A. Riley said that the bill’s stated intention—to achieve
national economic planning—sounds good, "if you believe that
the federal government is capable of making your business oe-
cisions for you—and we know that the federal government has
rarely been able to manage any sizeable enterprise economically.”
Eventually, he continued, the government would realize it
couldn't meet its unrealistic goals and would begin allocating
resources by product line with respect to labor intensity, energy
consumption and other factors basic to the manufacturing process.
Nationalization of our critical industries would follow that, Mr.
Riley said. This would deprive the consumer of his rights “to shop
for price, for quality, for the kinds of goods he desires."
