10 YEARS AGO
Joni Lynn Lowe was
winner of the Nyssa Stork
Derby. Joni Lynn arrived at
6 09 p.m. on New Year's
Day, with Dr. David Sarazin
as attending physician. She
weighed seven-pounds, four-
ounce*. The family resides in
Parma and Joni Lynn joins a
brother, Richard 14, and a
sister. Diana. 12. Her grand
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Lee
Cash of Apple Valley and
Mrs. Mabel Lowe of Twin
Falls.

learned of the untimely death
of Mrs. Warren Farmer on
the afternoon of New Year's
Day 1966.
Mrs. Farmer, 43-year-old
mother of seven, succumbed
at Malheur Memorial Hospi
tal following a stroke.

discharge from the Army.
During hi* tour of duty, he
spent IS month* in Korea.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
C N. Neely.

After more than three
year* in Army Service. T/4
Ray Huffman of Nyssa saw
hi* infant son for the first
time last week when he
returned home from a ve
teran* hospital at Phoenix.
Arizona. Mr
and Mrs.
Huffman and three year old
son. will go to Phoenix about
January IS and will remain
there until Mr. Huffman is
released, probably in June.
They will then return to
Nyssa to make their home.
Huffman, serving in the
Army for three years, nine
months, saw service in Africa
and Europe.

Letters have been sent to
all residents of Nyssa and
vicinity this week by the
committee arranging the
campaign to raise money for
construction of the proposed
Malheur Memorial Hospital
to be established in Nyssa.
The committee said that
"To perpetuate the memory
of those who have made the
supreme sacrifice in this past
war. and to do it in a way
• hat it i* believed would
please those who now lie
buried in foreign soils, by
making available service to
their families, friends and
neighbors, the project of
constructing and operating a
modern hospital in this area
has been proposed.

Adrian—Work started this
week on the new school
grounds where a grade
school will be constructed
early in 1936. The fund* for
the fixing up of the school
grounds are WPA relief
money and the money that
will build the schoolhouse is
PWA and district money.

Adrian—Snow fall in and
around Adrian is greater this
year than it has been for
several year*. At present a
total of about <••••• rnche» has
fallen since Thursday night.
Much of this has melted this
week, due to the sudden
change of temperature.

Fred Powell shot a monster
wild goose Wednesday while
hunting a few miles below
town and is anticipating some
fine "eats" at hi* New Years
dinner. The bird weighed
eight pound* when dressed
and was fat a* butter.

R. E. Weant. local dealer,
has estimated that between
four and five thousand
Christmas turkeys have left
Vale since the opening of the
holiday market early this
month. Most of them were
hauled in trucks to Payette
and from there consigned to
eastern markets. The last two
weeks, the turkeys have been
purchased for local trade. Six
dollars per turkey is a low
average price for the entire
month's business and many
of the birds brought as high
as $7 and $8
It might be roughly esti
mated that turkeys valued at
$30,000 have left Vale for the
holiday market.

When I was in college, at
my blessed alma mater. The
University of Puget Sound
(rah! rah!), I was (old of an
unique creature known as the
geoduck. or gweduc. At first.
I didn't believe a word I was
hearing, feeling that as an
"out-of-towner". I was being
"put-on". Imagine, a clam
one foot across, with a neck
sometimes three feet long,
that can dig faater than a
steamshovel I Baloney!!! I
was a dyed-in-the-wool skep
tic, until one day. a date of
mine, she was very tough-
dug one up for dinner. Since
that time, and I still get
indigestion thinking about it,
I have never run across
another such phenomena that
was unbelieveable - until 1
came to Nyssa.
"A what?" I said, flatlan
der that I was,..
"A thunderegg!!!" ans
we red my friend for the fifth
time.
"Now let me see if I've got
this straight" I knew I did.
but it sounded fishy, or. in
light of my past experience,
clammy. "A thunderegg is a
ruck, right’ (So far so good I)
And this big rock has a little
rock inside it. right? (Well,
my friend noted that wasn’t
quite it. but close enough for
now ) And you dig for them,
right? (All this poppycock
about how you used to pick
'em up off the ground wasn't
going to fool me!) And if you
don't have time to dig, you
can buy 'em, right? (Once a
year it seems some musical

driving around, digging, and

That's where the conver
sation ended. Now, I'm the
first to admit that the
wonders God has created are
beautiful and sometime*
hard to fully appreciate. In
fad. the miracle of life, itself,
is a hard thing to explain.
But. an empty, rockles* rock
that you eat in a sandwich?
