Carla Back Return»
Home From Germany
The following article was
written by Carla Beck,
daughter of Mr and Mrs
Mel Beck, who returned
recently from a tnp to
Germany.
1 left Salt Lake City, June
II for Frankton. Germany. I
staved with the Werner Broo
family, family friends of the
Becks, at Ludwigshafen tn
southern Germany. Even
though I had taken a year of
German in high school, it was
difficult to understand the
German dialect they spoke in
Ludwigshafen.
During my four week stay
in Germans I visited a
German school The students
go to school four and one half
hours a day. every day except
on Sundays. There are no
extra curricular activities, but
a lot of homework
I also hiked through
forests, visited castles, at
tended ballets and movies
and visited my brother,
Richard, who lives at Kaiser
Slautern
The German people are
very generous and polite
Their diet consists mostly of
cakes, breads, potatoes and
«sausages They don't eat
much fruit or many ve
getables.
A few of the German
customs that I noticed is to
always shake hands upon
greeting and parting.
Everything is more expen
sive in Europe A quart of gas
costs around 89c and a
drivers license costs about

It is seldom you see large
cars. If you do. they are
usually driven by Americans
The streets are very narrow
and in little villages they are
cobblestoned
On the sixth day of July we
went to France. We stayed at
the French Riviera and
visited Strassburg Lyon.
Nice. Monte Carlo and
Monaco. France was very hot
during the day but the nights
are quite cold.
