Oregon Ski Slopes
Enjoy Early Snows
Combine a snowier than
usual November with a low
elevation freezing level in
Oregon and what do you have?
Mid-winter skiing conditions
in December.
Those are the conditions
at all 17 of Oregon’s ski
areas, most of which were
in full operation before
Thanksgiving. Some major
areas already have recor
ded from 80 to 100-inch
snowpacks which, in a cou
ple of cases, are more than
twice as deep as any re
ported during the full 1972-
73 season.
The famed Timberline
Lodge Ski Area on Mt. Hood,
the oldest area in Oregon
and one of the pioneer ski
areas in the nation, has
the most snow on its runs
at this time of year in its
history. Timberline repor
ted a
90-plus-inch snow
depth heading into Decem
ber, while neighboring Mt.
Hood Meadows had over 100
inches. The nearby Multor-
por-Ski Bowl area near the
4,000-foot level of the II,-
235-foot mountain already
had 5 feet of packed snow.
Similar conditions exist
further south in the Cas
cades at the Hoodoo Ski
Bowl and at the Willamette
Pass Ski Area.
Both the
Mt. Ashland Ski Area in
Southern Oregon and the An
thony Lakes area in the
northeastern corner of the
state enjoyed their earliest
openings in history and re
port record depths for this
early point in the season
Realizing
that gasoline
isn't as abundant as this
season’s early snowfall, Ore
gon ski area operators have
been busy organizing expan
ded bus service and encou
raging car pools.
The Mt. Bachelor area,
in cooperation with the Cen
tral Oregon Recreation Asso
ciation, is providing a par
king lot at the edge of Bend
and organizing car pools to
transport skiers 22 miles to
its slopes, The area also
operates its own bus ser-
vice to Bend and to nearby
Sunriver and the Inn of the
Seventh Mountain, two-of
Central Oregon’s fine, year-
round resorts.

ceives daily bus service
from Portland and other ma
jor cities in the Willamette
Valley.
Each of the Mt. Hood ski
areas provide weekend bus
service from Portland. Over
night accommodations and
free bus service to Tim
berline, Mt. Hood Meadows
and Multorpor-Ski Bowl are
offered at Bowman’s Re
sort, 45 miles west of Port
land off U.S. Highway 26.
Bus service is also avail
able from the town of Wemme
with all riders receving a
$1 discount on lift tickets.

and other points in the Wil
lamette Valley to the Hoodoo
Ski Bowl and Willamette Pass
ski areas has been initiated.
Transportation service from
La Grande and Baker to An a
thony Lakes is provided by
the Anthony Lakes Ski Club.
Operators at Mt. Ashland
are exploring possible bus
service from Ashland which
is 18 miles from the area.
There is daily commercial
bus service from Portland to
Ashland, La Grande and Ba
ker.
