THE X-RAY DEPARTMENT.
The function of the X-ray Department
ia to provide the beat diagnostic assis
tance possible to the attending phy
sician and the patient. The X-ray te
chnician is available day and night,
and his or her primary consideration
is always the welfare of the patient.
This is best served by obtaining the
maxium amount of diagnostic infor
mation.
A single x-ray can sometimes tell
several things. For instance, a single
film of the chest for tuberculosis can
also show the measurement of the
heart, or air under the diaphram, which
could mean a perforated ulcer. A single
film of the abdomen can show excess
gas in the stomach, or a calculi in a
ureter, or will sometimes even show
gallstones.
When a child has had a head injury
it is important to get several films,
with the head positioned in at least
five different ways, because the head
is like an egg shell and can have a
fracture line anyplace.
Very frequently a patient has pain so
great in one area that something else
can be overlooked.
The technician
tries to get all the information possible
in order to cover all the areas involved.
The Radiologist reads the film with
infinite care and makes a report to the
attending physician.
X-rays made in the hospital, and the
reports thereon, are the property ofthe
hospital They are made available at the
request of the patient to any physician
who is caring for the patient, so that
their use is for the best possible care
of the patient.
The Malheur Memorial Hospital has
the latest of radiology equipment, which
includes a X-Omat which is the develop
ing unit of the x-ray film. With this
piece of equipment, film can be develo
ped in 90 seconds. This can be very
important in case of emergencies.
X-Ray technicians are on call 24
hours per day for the convenience of
the community.

One of the real production limi
tations facing alfalfa seed growers
this coming crop season is a short
age of pollinators to set the seed
crop. The problem is that only the
leafcutter and alkali bees do an ef
ficient job in pollinating enough al
falfa blooms to produce a good seed
crop.
Both will be in short supply
this coming year.
The leafcutter bee population has
been declining for several years due
to a number of causes. These in
clude losses to insecticide, losses
due to cold or windy weather periods
and an unknown factor that cause high
larval mortality. Some farmers have
used the same bee boards for a num
ber of years and many of the holes
are filled with cells that didn’t hatch
and are infested with such nest des
troyers as carpet beetles, grain
beetles and other parasites and pre
dators that reduce the leafcutter
population.

STOCK CLUBS
Now is the time of the year that
4-H Livestock Clubs are getting or
ganized for the coming year. Every
area of Malheur County has at least
one club available for young people
9 to 19 years of age that are In
terested In livestock.
The mam concern of these young
stockmen at this time of the year
is selecting and purchasing their
projects.
To show these projects
at the 1974 Malheur County Fair,
August 14 - 17, market beef animals
must be in the member’s possession
by March 1 and market hogs and lambs
by May 15. Al) other animals must
be in possession by June 1.
When
selecting market project
animals 4-H members need to keep
in mind the weighTrequirements for
animals going through the Junior
Auction.
These weights are beef
850 to 1200 pounds;
sheep 80 to
125 pounds and swine 180 to 235
pounds. Animals not meeting these
weights can be shown at the fair
but not sold through auction.
Last year over 335 young people
participated in livestock clubs and
present interests indicates that the
participation will increase this year.
Anyone interested in joining a live
stock club may either contact live
stock leaders in their area or the
Malheur County Extension office.

Herb’s Views

Here it's November with 14 inches of
snow in my front yard. It seems to me
that 1 read somew!:«re that we were
going to have an open winter this year
because we always have two or three
years in a row of the same kind of
winter. 1 looked back in my records
for the last 22 years and this is a
record of some sort.
Now what should we look forward to.
One of the weather prophets in this
area told me, "Don't fussabout this
snow because it’ll all ram off in a
few days." A not tier said, "Man, we
can sure expect a lot of deep snow
this year ’cause this Is going to stay
with us."
This brings to mind the ancient
Indian who wisely said that it was
going to be a long, cold whiter. When
asked how he knew he replied,"White
man bankum house."
1 knew we were going to have a lot
of snow because the highway crews
put up tall snow markers. The only
time my system for foretelling the
weather fails is when the highway crews
goof up and use the wrong poles. This
usually happens but it looks like this
year's going to be a winner.

everything
This afternoon my wife
found a water bird of some sort wal
lowing around in the snow.

know about the bird is that it has a
long sharp beak, red eyes and a black
topknot
1 never saw a bird like it.
There were several of them found and
all died so 1 guess this will be the
probable fate of this little fellow.
Anyhow he missed the southern turn
and got Io6t.
Yesterday 1 went up town and was
griping about the snow to a friend of
mine
He advised me to cheer up as
1 had only about six more months
to put up with it. He then said,"Any-
how Herb the snow’s beautiful Just
think your’e living on a large Christmas
card. It really is beautiful isn’t it?"
1 replied, "Yes the snow is beauti
ful, but on the otherhand, so is a
forest fire. However I really don't
want to live with either one of them."!
