Thursday, Jun« 21, I973 Th« Nyita Gat« City Journal, Nyssa, Oregon SUNSET VALLEY ACTIVITIES BY MARTHA LORENSEN - Í Most Oregon Streams Safe Most Oregon streams and ri vers are safe for swimming, re ports the Department of Environ mental Quality. However, DEQ laboratory tests show bacteriological con ditions make water contact ac tivities potentially hazardous in the Tualatin River system from Gaston to the river’s mouth, Johnson Creek, Marys River below Philomath, Pudding River, Columbia Slough, Rickreall Creek, Bear Creek and the Mal heur River. All other streams and rivers in the state are bactenologically safe for water sports, but swim mers should avoid areas within about 100 yards of a sewage treatment plant or industrial outfall as a precaution against the possibility of a mal functioning treatment system. DEQ also reports that no stream waters can be consi dered safe for drinking, be cause even in isolated areas there is a chance of recent, local contamination from up- stream uses.
